RE: Moose hunting in ME
There are several methods most employed up here and driving the paper company roads watching the clear cuts used to be the number 1 method. The clearcuts are growing in now and the huge spruce budworm infested areas are long gone so not many new ones being cut of any size.Finding areas of moose density(not hard at all) and calling is the newest and most popular form of hunting being used.Thank goodness they finially banned using spotter planes(the height of unsportsman like hunting techniques)Staying near boggy areas and calling during the rut are two key tips.Advance scouting to find where some larger bulls hang out is also a good technique. We hunted two days before we saw our first bull in WMD 11 one of the lowest success areas.I posted below somewhere maybe its fell to page two what the success rates are in the various WMD' s and they are not all equal.Moose are hard to move far so be prepared to quarter and pack out if you hunt far from the road(where a lot of the bigger bulls are) or use a call to bring them out where you can shoot them near an area where you can get a vehicle close.Lot of quality good eating meat and some really nice bulls up here.Always some that go 50 inches and some over 60.Good Hunting if you are drawn.
