Is your friend also hunting or just tagging along? It's good to take new people out hunting but it's difficut enough to get close enough to deer with just yourself much less with a rookie along. The idea is to have fun and get your buddie hooked I imagine, so here's what I'd do.
For get the chairs, just one more source of odor and noise in the woods. Public ground, I don't know how it's set up but my friend would be my rattler. Set him up on the ground with lots of cover. My favorite cover is a camo tree umbrella or two. Set him up down wind from you or you both can work from the same ground blind but I'd use my climber and hang it up wind from him. I'd also make him smell like a doe in heat and assure him that I'll shoot anything that tries to mate with him. lol
I'd have him rattle on the ground and I mean really rattle. Rattle, stomp, beat slash, get him to sound like 2 deer fighting. You can do this all day, you can have him leave sent drags for you also and if it's just not working out, send him on a long, slow deer drive. Try to get him involved in away you can take advantage of instead of just being there. Take advantage of a second set of eyes, take advantage of the extra noise he'll make and with a little thought and effort it might work. You can actually cover a lot of ground, setting up in different spots. Set up, rattle, wait and move on. A good rattle on the right day in the right place can bring a buck right to the truck and can be a lot of fun.
Good luck
