Best advice is go to the shop and start holding rifles. The 223 will be the cheapest ammo, the 243 or 25-06 will be good for deer to (even though you didn't ask) but for me to get a good varmit rifle would be a 204 ruger, its fast its accurate and puts a heck of a wack on whatever it hits.
