whitetail on Discovery channel...
Did anyone happen to catch the show on whitetails last night on Discovery channel at 10-11PM central time? Fun show to watch just for the footage, etc. But one staggering statistic was this:
Stat #1 At the turn of the century (last) when game laws were being strictly enforced because deer were almost depleted completely from the U.S. the population of deer had grown back to about 500,000.
Stat #2 Today over 500,000 deer are killed each year in collisions with cars/trucks on roads.
The ' scientific' study showed that the way the US population was extending and populating the areas was actually creating IDEAL circumstances for whitetail procreation and habitat, but that because of it all they were becoming too familiar with humans and their ways (i.e. cars) and in some cases have lost fear or care around them.
So my question is: We' re creating ideal habitat for deer procreation. All over the US (according to the show last night) deer are thriving, but there' s 500,000/year killed by cars alone. Are we doing more damage then we are good? Have we just created a ' new natural selection' . What' s interference doing is the best way to put it I suppose.
