Scrapes can happen anytime. Remember it's not the bucks that control the rut, it's the doe. Some scrapes can be territorial not breeding and some, just because. When I was in KS hunting turkeys on at the begining of April there was an active scrape near one of our setups. Active because it was freshly pawed with a print in it. Not breeding at all.

And I agree, some are anxious youngsters.
