I also shoot a Savage .270 and it does not have too much kick to it. But I have shot quite a bit, so it makes a difference. If you are really new to shooting, I would suggest a .243 or a 6mm (.244).

As for a shotgun, for a first gun, you can't beat a Remington 870. Actually, it is a gun that is great forever, not just a first gun.
If you are looking for a semi-auto, a Stoeger 2000 is a good low-priced auto shotgun.
