i dont know where your gettin your info at, but .17 hmr has always worked for me, as long as it was less than 75 yards, as long as your confident in your shot placement and know you will not misplace your shot, whenever i hunt i never make the shot unless i know i will make the kill shot, so if you feel comfortable with your shot placement and your gun i belive you can use either, well i know that you can use either.
