Check out the pawn shops in your area. you can't just look at the price tags you have to talk with the salesperson just because the price tag says $500 dosen't always mean that's what they will take for it. I got .222 rem 700 with 6-24X50 tasco scope and bipod (price tagged at $500)after looking at it andhaggling with salesperson about some of the scratches we came up with a pricethat worked for us both $290 after tax.
Gun shows are another good place to find gooddeals toyou have tohaggle with them.
Last thing don't just look at the pretty ones rough stocks can be covered with a wrinkle coat paint it gives it a look like a synthetic
I picked uparuger 77 .22-250with 3-9X40 tasco for $100 it had great blueing and riflingbut a busted stock and floor plate got another stock for $100. haven't got new floor plate yet$200 in it and it shoots great. (new floor plate about $25)
