well , I went through this delema just recently. torn between the two .. well hate to be told the perfect caliber for anything because its not what you got but how you use it. I got myself a savage model 24s 22mag / 20ga and it has served me well. dont take shots over 100 yards, the shotgun has taken a runner at 30 yards that i would have never got with a rifle. hope this helps
