Default RE: New Remington 710 rifle

Funny that this thread popped up again so recently.

I had been considering the Remington 700 in .300 Ultra Mag, but I decided that it is just too much gun. So when I was at the store today looking at shotguns and picking up my last doe tag, I checked out what they had in 7mm magnum. The 710 was on the shelf and I picked it up. I liked the feel of it, and was mildly happy with the detachable magazine. The salesperson said that they hadn't had any complaints about the gun that they were aware of. They didn't have any 7mm magnum in stock, but they were going to call another store tomorrow to see if they could get one.

I think that I'm going to stop by in the morning and tell her to forget it. I'll drop an extra couple of hundred bucks and go with the 700, or maybe another gun comletely.

A few years ago, I bought a Remington 597 .22, and it was the biggest piece of junk I have ever shot. I shot about 300 rounds through it, and I about 25% of them failed to eject. Remington was no help at all. I had to drive the gun 50 miles each way to the "authorized repair facility" for them to replace the extractor. The gunsmith told me that it was a common problem and they were seeing it a lot. He also told me that I would always have to shoot high velocity rounds through the gun, or it would jam on a regular basis. I ended up selling the gun to a person who didn't mind paying the extra money for the high velocity rounds and I bought a Ruger 10/22. Never had a problem with it.

When I first picked up the 710, my first thought was, "It's like the 597's big brother." But the salesperson insistence that the gun was decent let me think that maybe this gun was different. I should have known better. I have to reiterate that I have never fired this gun, but reading a lot of the bad reviews this gun has gotten has made me think twice.

I know a lot of people swear by Remington, but they way that their customer service treated me has made me very weary of them.
