Out of curiousity...what is the effective killing range of a 22 LR (assuming that you cn hit it)?

The Mossberg 22LR is my Grandfather's old 22. It's been shot a total of about 10 times until I recieved it.

BTW, what is the largest animal that you would shoot with a 22, ethically. I'm thinking a head shot at a coyote would be a bout the biggest.
