RE: Zeiss Conquest vs. Leupold VX-III
Well this is based on experience with one scope so it could have been a dud that slipped thru quality control maybe.I ordered a FF ll on the advice of a sharp scope fanatic friend and he raved about the optics quality and price so I decided to get one and try it out.I have a Redfield Golden Five Star and Leupold Vari X ll and a B&L Elite 3000 all in 3x9x40 already and after really trying them out at dawn and dusk watching a broke tree limb in the back field(225yds) and seeing when they would stop being able to make it out and fade out I knew the Leupold and Redfield were pretty much tied a full 8-10 minutes longer than the B&L.I put the Burris up when I got it and looked thru it and it looked kinda fuzzy so I thought it was out of focus bad,I usually focus on 1" writing at 50 yds and focus in till I can read it at 5X and then try it on print at 100yds and at higher power and split the difference.I focused the Burris and discovered it was clear as can be in the center but got fuzzy as you looked out to the outer edge of the lens.Thinking maybe it was me I had my son look thru it and compare to the other scopes and he said Dad I don't want to hurt your feelings on your new scope but its not near as sharp and crisp as the ones you already got.I couldn't believe it was not as good so I spent the afternoon fiddling with it and focusing it different and used lens cleaner on the lenses to make sure nothing was on the outside from manufacture. At dusk it really became apparent as the light faded it was the dimmest of the group and the least distinct also it simply lacked clarity.I was sick and figured I was had and was going to eat a scope or sell it for a lot less than I paid.I had paid $179 for it from D&R Sports and called them and told them my sad tale of woe,Mark told me to send it back and they would give me full credit on another scope.I took him up on it and just got my new scope while I was typing this response(weird huh?).Now I want to say that I'm NOT bashing Burris and don't know if that one scope was indicative of all FF ll's or was a bad one.I just know I would never have been happy with it as it was just not at the level of my other scopes in that $ range.I try not to be an optics snob and think I can recoginize quality in any price range scope cause I've owned all levels at different times in my shooting career.I have heard that the Signature Burris scopes are top of the line on optics so except for weight I've never heard anything negative about them. They are the only scope maker that still grinds their lenses stateside and they also make Pentex scopes. These are just the facts as I experiened them. What do you think?Did I get a bad scope you think?Guess I'll never know now as its left town for Pa.
