RE: Deer farming, breeder bucks whats it for?
Not all deer farms are breeding top class shooter deer for so-called hunting pros to shoot. In fact many of you have heard of Sam Collora you know Mrs. Doe Pee. He raises deer for urine only I belive, as well as my father. However you need the good genetics to get any response. I think deer can distinguish dominance through the smell of urine. Therefore if you have a 4 1/2 yr. old buck that your collect pee from and he only scores say 50'', a true monster buck wont normally screw around with such an inferior buck. Only if hes after the same doe as this smaller buck he will chase him off, but normally wont go looking for a fight not worth while. Now if you collect urine from a 4 1/2 yr old that scores 150'' if theres a monster buck in the area he will look for this competetor in hopes of tearing him a new one and getting the estrous does to himself. I dont know if its proven but its my theory. Just like a big old booner will have that super strong musky smell to him, but a basket buck of the same age isnt as pungeont.
I think does are the same way. I hate to compare it this way but some women have an undesirable smell to them and some are welcoming. You can buy does all day long for a couple hundred dollars on deerfarmer website. However their are those good genetic does that bring in big $$. Last year my dad spent $5K each on 2 does, both lived less than3 months and died. Thats the way it works, you want good genetics you pay for them.
Now for hunting pen raised deer. Some do raise for that purpose. Our deer, (most of) you can litterally walk up and pet them. We will NOT sell any deer as shooters. Before a purchase is made my dad asks why they want the deer. If they are going to a hunt club even as breeders, deals off. Breeders become shooters over time and what would the challenge be w/ a deer that acts like the family dog.
