Several factors caneffect apple production. Early frosts like mentioned. Lack of rain, too much rain. Apple tree's are not going to produce loads of apples every yr.
One thing I would like to add on helping your apple trees. You can't fertlize & prune at just anytime of the year either. There are times when its best. Pruning is done during dormancy. Usually Jan.-mid March in NY.
