I've never hunted with a dog

One thing I learned early on, no shooting doubles. One at a time and watch it til it hits the water! If it even twitches on the way down or in the water, shoot again!

You also need to shorten up the distance of shots. Hardest duck to find is one that makes it into the swamp grass.
