Default RE: looking for first rifle

The .30-06 is about the best all around cartridge their is. That being said, I totally agree with younggun308's comment that once you own a .30-06, you really don't need another rifle, and who really wants to be done buying rifles, come on. I may be speaking out of turn, but I have never really understood why someone would want a .308 Winchester over a .30-06? Maybe I am just naive, but what would be the point? I have owned a 7mm-08 and really loved it. I think the 7-08 and .243 are the best manifestations of the .308 Winchester cartridge. Being .284 caliber over .308, allowed me to shoot some smaller bullets for varmints. Eventually though, I traded the 7mm-08 for a .243 and now had an outstanding varmint and small deer gun. Anyway, I am rambling. The .30-06 will do about anything you ever want a rifle to do, maybe not the latest cartridge out there, but still a dandy.
