Default String Stoppers

I noticed while flipping through my Cabela's and Bass Pro books that some crossbows have them little stoppers (don't know the actual name) to stop the string when fired.

What purpose do these stoppers serve? Do they quiet down the bow? Gain any FPS to the bow?

I measured on my bow yesterday and see that my string goes 1.5" past where the string rests when its fired.
