While i'll admit to shooting many varmits with a larger then required cartridges, I don't believe it is possible to buy one rifle that is suitedfor varmit to elk + sized game. So I would personally wash the idea of one cart. for everything. Sorry but if your after pelt and after bigger NA game you'll be better served by more then one rifle. The 3006 is a solid choice for biggame in NA and will serve you on the odd varmit pop but its ability to use the large selection of the 308 cal bullets shouldn't be confused with excellence for an all purpose round. Same said for a 270, 7mm, ect... Point is buy for now and let the future take care of itself!
