I'm not the most experienced bowhunter in the world, but out here in the midwest, mid-october is pre-rut and I haven't had too much luck trying to bring in the bucks with doe scents, grunts or rattling. However I have had luck with hunting food sources, particularly oak groves when the acorns starting dropping. When the acorn drop starts happening it generally takes place right at first light and sounds like it's raining in the woods. I have literally seen deer run to the oak grove looking to fill up on a plentiful food source.
If I were you I would locate one of these oak groves, find the most obviously used deer trail to place your stand and don't forget to play the wind correctly! When you hear what sounds like rain in the woods at first light, hang on and wait to see them come running
