There are so many choices for deer... and for anything of that matter. Let's see... the .243 is great deer rifle for beginners and doesn't deliver as much kick as say a .270 or .30-06. But, the .270 has one of the flattest trajectories on the market. The .30-30 would be a great brush gun, but with a maximum range of 200 yds, which I wouldn't even feel comfortable with. The 7mm-08 has an extremely wide selection of bullets, with ballistics similar to the 7mm, just with a little less kick, and it shoots about 200 fps slower thana .270...
There are so many choices out there, and a number of factors play out. Do some homework on a wide variety of calibers and decide for yourself what is best for you.
BTW, most hunters use the .270, .30-06, and the .308. I use a .270 and 7mm-08.
