The .30-30 is a ballistically inferior cartridge when compared to the .270 or the 7mm Mag. BUT..... It has probably killed ten times as many deer as both of those cartridges combined. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with the .30-30 for the purposes you listed, as long as you recognize and respect the ballistic limitations of the cartridge. Try to keep your shots broadside, and preferably under 200 yards.
