Have hunted NW Tioga/NE Potter since the early 60s. Beautiful country up there, wherever you land. As a general rule, the deer hunting istypicallybetter north of Rt. 6, but most of the public land (SGLs and State Forest) is south of Rt. 6.
My place is very close to the Potter Co. and NY borders. Plenty of land available forsalenorth of Rt. 49 where deer numbers are still very good, butseveral farms near mehave been bought in the past few years by "down-staters" for hunting land. Posted land seems to be on the increase, at least nearby to where I hunt. If you are only thinking of purchasing a few acres, might be better off near state lands?
Contrary to some opinions, deer numbers are still fairly high in many areas, but lower than previously, on some SGLs and SFs. As someone else noted, turkey numbers appear very good in almost all areas of Tioga County.
Gas prices are much higher and property taxes are on the increase, but it's still a great place to live. If I could pry the ol' lady away fromher clan, would've moved there long ago. Might anyway, one of these days....with or without her.
