Another tip is to make sure the camera isn't to close to where you expect the deer. With my camera, if the deer are right next to the camera I have the same problem. I also put it at an angle to the trail.... The deer tend to be walking towards me or away - but either way I see what I'm after...
Here's a couple of pics from my cheap trail camera - the deer are actually quite a distance away from the camera. I placed the camera angeling towards where I expected the deer to come from:
