i realize ammo cost is abit more of a concern when you can get a brick of .22 for 50rds of .17. but i know after getting a marlin 917V I lost any desire to purchase another .22 rifle short of an extra model 39A. The .17hmr is an incredible round capable of ridiculous accuracy. My buddy has a cheapo simmons scope and at 65yards can take his target paper down shooting the 4 tacks holding it up with only one shot apiece. But if you remain content on the .22 I vote Marlin anything, if you get a rimfire you can't go wrong with Marlin. I LOVE Ruger except their rimfire rifles. I've had the worst trouble from a magnatude of 10/22s i've used. most of them are feeding related but feeding or otherwise its still a problem. If I empty a 550rd brick of Federal .22 in my model 60I might have 1-3 missfires and most of the time its ammo related.
I 2nd that the marlins are real nice shooting firearms.
