I believe the swivel was designed to prevent your line from twisting and then a snap was added to make changing of lures easier.. When doing a lot of trolling or fishing in fast current your fishing line has a tendancy to twist upon youand cause alot of tangles.With the aid of a swivel this will help prevent alot of this.
