Default Using Sheds for Rattling

I was lucky enough to find 2 sheds today less than 3 feet apart while out hog hunting. I would like to use them for rattling. The Forest Service has been doing controlled burns where I found them so both are a little "roasted". They're not charred or anything (eccept for the tips) but they just look a little like a roasted peanut. The were almost completely buried under pine needles. I rattled them a bit and I think they sound fine. My question is, do I need to do anything to them before I use them. I have heard of some method of treating them to keep them from splitting but I can't find any info on the subject. If they'll be ok as they are that will be fine too.
