RE: Remington 700 SPS vs XCR - please help!
I have to say that I have the SPS Stainless in 270WSM and it is a real shooter. I have lots of rifles in lots of calibers....this is my go to for about everything bigger than coyotes.
Someone asked how the 270wsm was better than the 338 or 300wm or some other bigger guns.....It is better because it does it more efficiently with a short action and less powder. If I were to go after dangerous game, I would prefer one of the others in bullet wts larger than is available in .270 caliber.
I am handicapped and can't go in the hinterland after trophies of a lifetime. However a neighbor of mine makes anual sojerns to Such Places as Alaska, British Columbia and the NWT. He has taken moose, sheep, goats, elk, Brownbear, Blackbear, elk, muledeer and of course the king of big game...the whitetail in the past 3yrs. All were taken with a Weatherby Vanguard in, you guessed it, 270WSM. All taken with Nosler Accubond or Partitions and all but one were one shot kills. The Brownbear was given a little insurance at the guides insistance even after it was down....Can't Say That I Blame Him!!!!
Anyway, Maam. I would think the XCR is overkill, it is just $300 or more extra he won't need. As for caliber. The 30-06 is always the way to go if there is a choice to make. Shells are available at about every country store and WalMart in the US and Canada. I seriously doubt your husband reloads his ammo yet, so forget the 270wsm. The shells cost too much, are hard to find if you can find them at all, and the good old 30-06 will do anything the WSM will do, CHEAPER!!! This round celebrated it's 100th birthday last year (thus the '06) and it is currently the #3 selling cartridge in the US. Not bad forcentury old technology.
