Yes, it is best to hunt during the rut. Statistics have proven that most of your trophy animals in the books today are took relatively close to the peak of the rut. This is the one time of the year that bucks will let their gaurd down to breed does. That is not to say that prerut and post rut won't be successful, however, during the peak days of the rut may be the only time big bruisers show themselves during daylight hours.
