RE: .17HMR or .22LR
Get a Marlin .22 LR, my dad bought one at Wally World for $200 once, and it's fine, just make sure after you buy it that all the screws are in place, as lots of firing can loosen them over time, and this is also applicable to high-powered center-fire rifles, especially bolt-actions.
Anyway, if you can fing a Ruger 10/22 in .22 WMR, those are rather rare, and also are nice guns from what I hear, but any loss of accuracy would probably be made up for with the increase of knockdown power.
