shot placement is the key to stoping them. any large cal. rifle will do, you just have to put the bullet through the heart or spine, a lung shot will kill but the hog can take it and run off and they don't bleed much. the best spot to aim is in the arm pit the hide is the thinest at this spot and the heart is right there. if you can't get to this spot put the bullet in the side of the head right under the eye or behind it. never try shooting one in the side or shoulder 99% of the time if you do they will vanish into the brush.
Hmmm... I shot all of hogs through BOTH shoulders with my 7mm-08 at 400 yards, and all but one dropped in their tracks. The big boar that didn't drop only ran about 20 yards.
7mm-08 does the job!!
