New guy. Got 50 cal kentucky percussion. How many shots avg before must totally clean/ swab bore with water using pyrodex?
How often should I use cleaning patches and/ or brush- between shots?
Must I remove and clean lockafter everyshooting session?
Pyrodex is synthetic and does not contain sulphur like black powder- so no acid to corrode barrel but can produce hard deposits. Why is it necessary to clean immediately after shooting- should be able to wait weeks. Why will parts rust ifdon't clean and oil? thanks!
Q1. Every shot for best accuracy and easy loading. I use bore butter when hunting and just whatever cleaner I am using when at the range.
Others will tell you it doen't make a difference in their guns, it does in mine shooting at 100 yards. It does in mine shooting 50 open sights.
q2. How often should I use cleaning patches and/ or brush- between shots? See Q1.
Must I remove and clean lockafter everyshooting session? Yes. My brother runs his in his dishwasher, I just take mine apart and clean it with wet patches.
Q3. The manuals just say to clean after each use, so I do.I think it is because of build up, but it is real read dirty the first 2 or 3 patches, one you get to patch 5 or 6 your pretty clean.I havea TC Hawken FLand I clean it after each use, barrel and all parts. FL is high maintenance because you have to take it apart and clean it ever time with black powder. Prydex is harder to start than regular black powder, so shooting that with a FL may be a challenge for you.
