My family had one of these dogs when I was a teenager. They LOVE to hunt and roam. Our female was a great pheasant hunting dog, with a one qualification: it was very hard to train her to stay close to you. She would charge into a field, find a pheasant and hold it until you walked up to her, then flush it out on command. Quite an amazing thing, she could hold almost any pheasant indefinitely if needed. My dad didn't like hunting with her but I did, since I just let her search each field for all the birds.
Less walking for me. She would retrietive decently too, as I remember.
A very energetic dog, that was always friendly and playful with us kids. She didn't like cats or other small dogs, though.
