A northern hardwood forest should be kept thinned to 60-70 basal square feet per acre for trees over 9.5" in diameter. If you don't want to calculate the basal area, look at the canopy. A correctly thinned woodlot should have at least a few feet between the crowns of the trees on at least two sides.
