Default RE: Doe & Fawn Part II

If it is late in the season the fawn will be able to make it without its mother. Here in Texas fawns are born in May and June and most are weaned by the end of deer season. Our lease biologist told us that it is best to kill does early in the season, before the rut, so that the bucks don't waste their energy breeding a doe that will end up being killed later in the season. It also frees up any food source that might be used if she is killed early. The does killed will often be lactating butthat the milk haslittle nutritionalvalue.
