RE: When do you start shed hunting?
I have found a few sheds accidently while hunting but what really kicked it off was 4 years ago when my son was 6. I found a small shed, left it lay and decided to go home to get my son after work to show him. He was impressed to say the least and with a little looking he found the other side about 40 yards from the first shed. From that point shedhunting too a life of it's own for us. We found a few more that year before green up. 4 years later with many, many miles tromped, we have found 180 sheds.
We usually don't get too serious about tromping till the middle of Febuary and will look till green up in May. We generally find most of the sheds in feeding areas or trails leading to the feeding areas. Very few are found in the bedding area.
Binocs are a must!! In tall grass or in tree areas, it pays to look back from where you come every once in a while. Sheds can blend in real well and you would be surprised how many you walk by. Pay attention to light being reflected off an object on sunny days. Try to keep the sun behind you when you look. Do not expect to see the whole shed but learn to pick out a tine or part of a main beam sticking out of the snow, leaves or grass. Mostly have fun and enjoy what nature has to offer you since somedays that will be the only thing you find. There is a few more things I could tell you but this is the basics and what has worked for us. Goodluck.
