RE: Bought my first gun today!
Shotguns are a great thing. But all these new regulations can mess with someones thinking. No lead for this and lead for that.
I have the 870 pump 3" magnum SPT (special purpose turkey). I also believe that I have 8 choke tubes for the gun. What I found was that my shotgun shot Challanger Rifled Slugs through the smooth bore with an open choke better then sabots through the riffled chooke tube. Bouns was that the Challangers were cheaper. But the best results I got with sabots was from LIGHTFIELD sabots. They weee actually cheaper then most as well.
When I used to do alot of hunting with the shotgun, I used #2,4 BB's for Jack Rabbits & fox ....... #7.5 for grouse ........ #5,6 for pheasants ........ buckshot for wolves. I have carried buckshot for deer, but usually always use slugs. You will find that most all guns will shoot different ammo differently and you will need to find which patterns the best with your gun.
Most brand name shells would work great, some of the cheaper can have less power and sometimes, what I call miss shots, where you take a shot that you know should have been a kill but get nothing. I can't ever remember getting shots like that from the quality shells. For my grouse hunting now, all I use is shells from Wallmart (100 for $22 - 7.5). They work good enough for that and great for busting clay piggons when your getting used to shooting the gun. Best factor is the cost, you can shot alot more so getting used to the gun faster.
Good luck and enjoy.
