It may not be the water in the field causing lack of sign. It may be a lack of food. If there is something there for them to eat they will be there, water or no water. Find the food and you will find sign.

I have shot a few turkeys in this one particular field on our place. Always has either p nuts, soybeans, or corn planted in it. Leave it in fescue over the winter. Full of grasshoppers and all sorts of whatnot. I have shot two birds in that field after almost a week of heavy rain and there was so much mud on their feet I'm not sure how they could walk.

Now, they don't do incredibily well with standing water, but I have seen them wade creeks instead of flying them, but I would suspect they would prefer not to get wet.
