Here's a copy of what I sent to the Pan-Hunting Team.
Hello,
I recently watched one of you shows on the Outdoor Channel and I feel compelled to contact you. This particular show aired on January 10th and had the host bownunting for whitetails in Kansas. The first segement showed him taking a shot at a buck through a lot of brush and missing. I understand that the camera angle is not the same as the hunter's, but the host then stated " I didn't think I could get it through the hole, 'bout the size of a softball, but he was the 8 point of a lifetime!" ...Herein lies the problem.
A poor percentage is a poor percentage whether it's an 8point a 180 class or a squirrel...enough said.
The next segement shows him stalking a doe and taking a 48 yard shot...I have problems with this as well, but I don't believe it's unethical in and of itself. I certainly wouldn't have aired this though as the animal goes from slightly quatering to the shot to quartering away before the arrow arrives. Only by the grace of God did this shot find the animals vitals!
With this being said, I would have not been offended and embarressed had I not seen the last segement. After making a well placed shot, he shoots the buck, completely facing away from him, and hits him in the right flank! The edited-in announcer states" I never pass up a second shot."
Are you KIDDING ME?? I was appaulled and dumbfounded!! Why would he do this? Why would you AIR this??
I think that as sportsmen, especially sportsman ON TV, we need to show a little more common sense...and dare I say...be an EXAMPLE to young and new hunters! There are people watching that will now think this is how it's supossed to be done!
I have seen many other shows of yours and found them to be entertaining and well done. This is the biggest reason I take the the time to write to you. Please don't let the pressure of producing kills for the camera taint the starndard to which you and WE hold you to...the ethical, fair and humane standard.
I have voiced my opinions elswhere and will attach the link as well.
