The shrink tubing is for silencing as well as a "weather proofing" but like the others said, use common sense and if it shows were then change it......but I wouild not use cost of new cables a factor......I mean it is oyur life we are talking about....and that should be priceless...[8D] If it were me i would just order new cables...jm2c
