RE: Team 3 Official Thread!!!
Whatsup fellas- went out shedhunting all day yesterday, and took the diaphragms and the digital cam with me.
I didn't start calling until about noon when was taking a drink break and heard a gobbler shock at a passing crow. He was awfully far away, so I figured I'd challenge myself to draw him in off the ridge top. No response at all to some soft yelping, but I started a pretty aggressive fighting purring/clucking sequence, and he was hammering. Within 15 minutes, he was within 100 yards, and I was positioned behind a blind to snap a few pics. I turned the camera on, and was dead still.
I heard something in the brush behind me, crunch crunch crunch - and it was getting closer... and closer... and closer.... PFFFFFFFTTTTTTT -v-v-vvvvvvvvvvvv. Oh man.
I turned my head around as slow as I could, and there was a beast of a tom strutting behind at no more than 25 yards in the wide open woods. (Keep in mind that I'm wearing blue jeans, no face mask, and he's on the BACK side of me) - there was nothing to hide behind. I tried to creep the camera around, but he totally busted me. Putt! Putt! Off the ridge he went.
When he busted, the other bird (the one that I was calling to) also shut up and got outta dodge.
So, I never got any pictures at all. I can't believe that big bird strolled right in behind me - totally silent.
Man, if it was turkey season, he was toast. LOL
Found one nice shed - a huge fork - 19" main beam on it! LOL If his other side matched, he'd have had to have been the biggest forkhorn I've ever seen.
By the way - nice pics HT. Looks like you've got gaggles of hens in there, so you'll have to modify your calling to draw in the hens until they're all nested and the toms are alone. I saw a couple good flocks yesterday in my travels, but nothing quite like that.
