Not my best, but my best so far this year, one for Team 4!

After 3 wks of fighting a flooding river and hens, finally got one for team 4.

Weight: 17.5
both spurs: 1/2 inch
beard: 9 inches

I don't know how to post pics and I haven't tried to score it, so someone will have to do it. I must admit, I'm computer stupid.

j76 04-11-2014 04:42 PM

Way to go Dog1! Congrats!
My scouting trip this morn wasn't real great. Seen 3 strutters and a couple hens in a feild close to my grounds, and that was about it. Lookin like they are gonna be late getting em where I need them to be. Thinking the second week of the season is gonna be the time to be out there.

KingArthur 04-12-2014 02:39 AM

Congrats:party0005:

two more weeks to wait here before season starts

Congrats dog1. Opening day here in the blue grass was very windy gust of 25 mph. Hunted the afternoon with no luck. Going back in the morning to see what I can do in 30 mph winds. Got to love it.

zubba 04-13-2014 08:43 AM

Congrats Dog1. If you want, you can email me the pic & I'll post it for you. [email protected]

Pic and details.

First, thanks to Zubba for posting the pic.
buckman11 has asked for details. so here goes.

I went to the woods at 5 a.m. and sat in my truck drinking coffee. At 6 a.m. I got out to listen, I carry a chair in my truck and sit there drinking more coffee. I hunt hardwood river bottom land and it has been a nightmare because of river flooding which causes major problems moving about on our land, and the hens are still with the gobblers, that has created major problems.

At 6:30 a.m. I heard a bird gobble and went after him, and walked into some hens roosting. I think the dominant hen was already on the ground and I backed out. The gobbler was gobbling non-stop and I set up within about 150 yds from him. When he flew down I really started to work him and could hear the hens on the ground going towards him. Several times I thought he was coming to me. At one point he could not be over 50 yds from me but I couldn't see him. Then I'm assuming the dominant hen went into a frenzy. The gobbler went to her and I couldn't see him. A fight broke out, I believe either the hen got in a fight with another hen or the gobbler got in a fight with another gobbler, daingest thing I've heard. After the fight a hen took him away from me, by now it was 8:30 a.m. and he went quiet.

I walked back to my truck for some more coffee. At 9:00 a.m. I heard another bird and grabed my gun, stool, and homemade blind. I got set up and called to him every time he gobbled, I could tell he was coming. The last time he gobbled he was probably within 100 yds. I called to him and laid my call down, he walked in front of me at about 20 yds. and the rest is history.

I must admit, I got after one particular gobbler last year and could not bring him in. I only saw him one time last year and it was just to far to shoot, so I've been determined to get him this year. When he flys down, he goes east then turns north onto private property I couldn't go after him. I kept thinking they must have a feeder on their property, but this year I finally fiqured out what he was doing. Because of the high water flooding our land, I was determined to follow him staying around 200 yds from him, and could tell when he met with his girl friends.

Our river is supposed crest this coming Tuesday night, so that part of our land is out. But I'm not giving up on him.

Well season opens tomorrow, but won't be able to hunt till Thursday or fri. Scouted hard yesterday and wasn't real impressed but did see a few birds. Weather is really warmin up so hopefully things start happening in the next few days. Ended up losing one of my best spots this yr so I'm kinda limited on what I got to work with so it's gonna be tough but I'll give em hell anyways!! Good luck boys!

buckman11 04-20-2014 03:51 PM

:guiness: Good luck treebeard. I'm also heading out tomorrow morning. Supposed to be a little cool, but sunny & calm.

j76 04-24-2014 05:45 PM

Good luck boys!! I'll be out in the a.m. As well. This team needs to start puttin down some serious birds! Let's do it!!!!!

dog1 04-24-2014 11:32 PM

Team 4

I owe our team an apology. Since geting a bird, the contractors I higherd to remodel my house moved in I haven't got to hunt but 4 days and that was this past week. The reason I was able to hunt then was I had promised one my old military buddies I would take him and I just couldn't cancel on him.

Because of all the rain we've been geting the contractor works a few days and has to stop, drawing out the time they thought they could finish the job. I've been staying around the house in case they need something from Home Depot which is 30 miles from my home.

I know a sorry excuse, but I have let my house go and the work was badly needed. So all I do now is cheer all of Team 4 members on.

Well, so far it's bad weather and henned up gobblers. Got on a real good bird this mornin but he and his two hens didn't want to play. Then I heard a shot off in the direction they went so got a bad feelin he's gone. Gonna be sunny tomorrow so I'll find out in the a.m if he's still kickin or not.

zubba 04-26-2014 09:58 AM

I put down a decent gobbler this morning. I'll post pics & score later. Good luck all.

j76 04-26-2014 11:50 AM

j76 04-27-2014 03:56 AM

zubba 04-27-2014 04:37 AM

Congtrats j76. Starting to drop for the team now. I'll work on getting my pics off the camera too.

j76 04-27-2014 05:08 AM

Here he is

Ain't gonna score real good but i'm not gonna complain. I really didn't think there was anything left at this spot after the one we were after yesterday got shot.
My Dad got sick of hunting in the bad weather, gave up and went home yesterday afternoon so i headed out alone this morn basically just to verify the one we were after was gone. Was cold, but a beautiful morning, sunny and calm. Never knew there was so many birds around, they were gobblin on the roost in all directions, but nothing close. This guy was roosted way back behind me somewhere and covered a lot of ground in a hurry to get to me. He came in behind me and on the wrong side, gobbled about 20 feet behind the popup, finally caught sight of him thru some thick stuff as he tried to circle around the dekes. Was only about a 12 yard shot but thru a lot of cover.
Shot in Michigan, 4-27, 6:30 a.m. Eastern, with the 870.
21 lbs, 8 inch beard and little bitty 5/8 inch spurs.
Oh, and i'm not stoned in this picture, just a bad case of pink eye i gotta thank my son for givin me!

RJPOUTDOORS 04-27-2014 10:40 AM

Congrats glad to see someone is killing birds.

RJPOUTDOORS 04-27-2014 10:42 AM

This has been a rough season for me. Between working Saturdays and personal stuff it has be a strugls. Had two jakes come in while the toms stayed at the other end of the field.

buckman11 04-28-2014 03:07 PM

congrats to j76 & zubba both. really nice to be puttin some birds on the ground.

Treebeard 04-29-2014 06:41 PM

My brothers and I had a great opener they tag a double header and I hit a sapling which I don't know how I didn't see but saved old Mr Tom lol
What a great start rain ever since and for the next week so it will be slow :(

buckman11 04-29-2014 08:50 PM

j76 04-30-2014 03:48 PM

Well, thought I was done, got all my crap put away. Just talked to my sister, my mom and niece are coming up this weeken and my niece has never been hunting in her life, but does has a Hunter safety card (she's 17 I think) and she's fired up about the idea of gettin a turkey!! So guess I'm lugging the blind back out Friday afternoon for a couple more mornin hunts! Gotta love turkey season! Here we go again!

zubba 04-30-2014 03:53 PM

Here is my bird. He was all fired up in the roost. He gobbled and strutted right in to my DSD setup. Strutted right past a hen to 23 yards way until I dusted him. 23.5 lbs, 9" beard, 3/4" spurs.

Score: 56.5

buckman11 05-01-2014 08:22 AM

Treebeard 05-03-2014 03:25 AM

Been wet all week not seeing a lot of birds :(

buckman11 05-03-2014 04:48 PM

:(.........

RJPOUTDOORS 05-03-2014 04:54 PM

Not a good day, off work late last night so made it to the woods late. Shortly after getting set up had a tom come in. I drew back and let one go and it made a funny noise and flew funny also. I cought the bottom part of the blind with the arrow. This has been a rough season, one more day to get it done

RJPOUTDOORS 05-04-2014 10:05 AM

Bird down, last day to hunt. This jake and two of his buddies came in around 8:30 this morning. Not a big bird but will add a little to our score. 12.9 lbs. one spur .1250 beard 3.1/4

buckman11 05-04-2014 08:03 PM

hey man any bird is better then no bird at all. and any time you can take a bird with a bow it is an accomplishment. congrats

zubba 05-05-2014 04:23 AM

Congrats RJP.

j76 05-05-2014 09:51 AM

Nice work RJP! Gives us some more points and he'll be tastey i'm sure.
No luck for my niece this past weekend. Had a big group of birds roosted on the property to the south of me but couldn't get em to play nice. Sat. morn Had 2 strutters break off from the group, they wanted to come to us but just wouldn't commit. Had em struttin and gobblin for about 15 min. but wouldn't budge. At least she got a little excitement, got to hear lots of gobbles and see some birds, she had fun. Now its time to get the boat wet and catch some fish!
How many are still hunting?

zubba 05-06-2014 10:23 AM

I put down a nice upgrade this morning. Not a lot of gobbling going on today, but this guy, another gobbler, and two hens came in this morning. My buddy had his bow ready, but he got spooky at about 20 yards, so I dusted him with the gun.

26 lbs, 12 oz
Right Spur: 1" Left Spur: 1.125"
Beard: 10.25"

Your score is 26.75 + 10 + 11.25 + 20.5 = 68.5
