Thanksgiving Doe
 

Woke up at 5 this morning, stopped and got some gas and was off for some Thanksgiving hunting. My fiance hunts with me when she has the day off and we had a DMP for a unit that was about an hour drive. The unit we were hunting their was a high percentage of getting a DMP when we applied but not much public land to hunt. I cut a woodlot about twenty-five years ago and never went back to hunt that area since. I took a ride down to that area tues and sure enough it had been logged two years ago and was still open for hunting.:cool2: So yesterday I hunted the area a little, but more scouting than anything and found a nice ridge to sit on at first light. Today we arrived at an old logging header and park at about 6:15 and head in to the woods to get set up. With quite a few others in the woods hunting today I decided it would be best to sit together her on one side of a big black birch tree and me on the other, we both had quite an area to cover. At 7:35 I had three doe come in about 50 yards out and took the biggest through the heart she went about 80 yds and piled up. She weighs about 120 lbs and today I was hunting with my trusty .243 Rem model 788. I wanted my fiance to shoot the deer but all three were looking right at us and it was kind of a know or never shot.

man has it been slow. my son took a nice 6 pt and seeing deer left and right, me I cant seem to buy a deer right now.

Ive been out busting my butt, but nothing yet. Going back out this evening. Hopefully I will have some luck. Im ready to pull the trigger...

thanks guys. I guess i made a mistake with scoring the right g4. it's 1 3/8" to the tip but since the base is wider than the point length it shouldn't be counted. i updated the score in the scoring post, which is now 140 7/8".

i'm not an expert scorer by any means, but i used the form on the bcc website as best as possible. i think it's a little funny that i was called out by a guy who a. was saying you don't count c4 measurements without a g4 (which you do); and b. posted a buck without him/gun/deer in any pictures (as is pretty much the number one rule in this contest).

ah well, good luck everyone who is still out there!

Good job Boogeyman. Dont let it get to ya, he didn't even include a gun in his pic. No more hunting for this guy until Sat since I dont have a free babysitter. Mother-in-law can't watch my boy and my mom fell last night and broke her hip so she is out to. Guess its family time for a few days then back to the woods for the weekend.

Good luck when you get back out Snapper. My buddies and I did some drives today but no luck. We had a little 3pt come within 10 yards of one of us but let him walk. We also had two does circle us and "attempt" to cross the road. One was killed by a Mercedes and the other by a guy across the road. We ended up going out and talking to the officer and took the doe up to the butcher and donated it to the hungry.

if i get a pitc of the deer,myself and the car will it count???

Did you hit one Brian? or are you harassing me? I already had a doe otherwise I could have posed along the road with my gun next to me.

congrats boogeyman, nice buck. been reaaaaaal slow here, what a tough year. Things are looking up now 2nd rut just kicked in and even saw a decent chace yesterday. alot of grunting and chacing, perfect time to be in the woods I say.

How is it going guys? Been slow here. I need to get back out for our ML season but not sure when I can. My son is sick now and my "free" babysitter which is my mom has a broken hip and can't watch him. I hope to get out at least one or two more times. Hope thats all I need to get a buck on the board

well that was a tough gun season. Hopefully I can get it done during the next 9 days of muzzy season. At least a doe can walk by me I hope.

Its been slow here. I never saw a deer last weekend. Hopefully this weekend will be better...

Well I have 1 more day to hunt. Had a good morning today but couldn't make it happen. I got to my stand this morning and 5 minutes later there was all this noise, branches breaking sounded like turkeys. I stand up to see a turkey in a tree and a deer came walking out. He had me busted and was at 25 yards. Little while later 5 deer came in running and chasing each other, never got a shot but I think they were all little ones just running around.

All in all, no shot but it was nice to see some deer while I was hunting.

Well, thats it for me for 2012. We have meat in the freezer but it was a bust for me with a gun in my hand. Well time to break out the beagles and chase some rabbits now.

I'm same as you. I still have some time, but with all the deer that have been killed around me doesn't make sense to kill anymore.

Looks like you guys got to put a lot of days in the field, I'd count that as a success. I was hoping to do some late-season bow hunting but haven't gotten to yet and my last chance is 1st weekend in Jan.

WNY do you have the beagles as hunting dogs? My beagle is a house dog but I'm itching to see how she does with rabbits, even though I've never hunted them myself. She's really good about not running away when I take her shed hunting but is just 1.5 years old and the wife worries she'll take off to the next county and we'll never find her if I take her rabbit hunting (we live an hour away from the land I hunt). Any advice?

Yea, get her out now while she want to learn and chase. Take with other dogs that will help her catch onto what she should be doing. I had a litter sept 1st, we brought the female home and are in the process of house training it. I still have 2 male pups left and training for rabbits starts this week. We go with shock collars on all of ours just to keep them honest. They were born to chase and that is what they will do with deer, fox, coyote and rabbit until they learn you just want them on rabbits. Good luck and get her out there, its alot of fun.

I hope everyones season is going well! Good luck to those that are still out there. I just got word from the neighbor of my woods that the big 8 that I had been watching was found dead on his property. Another hunter gut shot it and never found it.

I'm guessing everyones seasons are done or either winding down. We gave it a good try but looks like we wont make the top. Thanks for everyone that participated and good luck for next year!

sitting in the blind again. hope the big guy steps out tonight. saw 20 deer yesterday evening. 5 bucks one of which i guess around 135 to 140. for the third time this year i passed him. hopfully the big 9 shows up. we shall see
