its embarrassing for the site.
it is called hunting. not go wound something and not recover it and go shoot something else and it's ok. in yer field you should know to wait for a better shot? practice practice practice? nothing less than perfect! what happened? its not a good example to push the "i wounded an animal and am going to go kill some more"...because then folks are like..... "fuggit, that guy wounded one and is gonna go practice some more on live game and its no big deal, and he is a wildlife biologist, ill just go shoot a few more my dam self til i figure this out!" vs "na dude i cant go (do what ever) cause i have to stay here and shoot arrows er the guys on huntingnet are gonna tar and feather me if i fugg up and take anything less than a perfect shot!" i think its easy to figure which way i would want my own kids mentality to be. |
My salary depends on people that buy hunting and fishing liscense. I have face to face contact with bowhunters everyday at my WMA and if I were to treat them the way you have treated me I would soon be out of a job and our WMA's would soon be closed to all hunters. I am there to help and assist hunters anyway I can and I should expect the same out of my fellow hunters. I did not spend days this summer in 110-115 degree heat practicing just so I can go out and make a bad decision or take a bad shot, I have to much respect for the animals and my own blood and sweat that I have put in over the years to manage and create a healthy herd at my WMA. I gave the deer the respect it deserved by searching high and low from sunup till sundown until every muscle in my body ached and I was totally exhausted. Today was my first time back in the stand since Tuesday night. As stated above it happens and there is nothing we can do about it because of the unknown variable of how that animal is going to react when that string is released. That is what draws us to this wonderful aspect of hunting.

wow looks like we have some personalities here on Team 15. let's all get along fellas
|
LOL There's no problem , I just didn't agree to that responsibility. Like I mentioned, I believe huck said he'd be capt. I think he's done it in the past.
I'll be taking the week of Oct 29th-Nov 3rd to hunt the rut, I'm pumped! It's been slow of late. Must be the "lull". :s2: |
Sorry bout my confusion.....I miss took a P.M and thought I was added to your team...My bad!
Good luck tho!!! |
I will gladly represent our team as captain...
If by Wednesday (10/10/12) and nobody objects, I will post our decision in the "captain checkin" thread. JNC, do-do does happen. I will proudly show trail cam side view photos of a doe with broad head scars behind both her right and left shoulder (a complete pass through), in a spot exactly where every bow hunter is expected to shoot. That deer was still standing two weeks later. There was nothing embarrassing at all related to this situation. I firmly believe deer spend every day of their life trying to survive. The fact that we place a hole through them doesn't change anything. I do appreciate hunters who act professionally-giving it their all, period. You my friend have nothing to be embarrassed by. Never let anyone steal your love and desire to be out there! Let's move forward in supportive roles. Shoot what you want...be professional in your approach. I spent this past weekend hunting pronghorn in Colorado. I used a rifle to dump a nice buck. He'll probably be my last pronghorn from Colorado. Hunting them with a bow and in Wyoming is too much fun! ![]() |

Well guys, I hate to be a let-down, but I killed a buck that won't be able to add points to our team score. I shot a small 8pt yesterday evening, and as far back on public land as I was, I couldn't take my buck, treestand, and my bow out at one time (getting older lol). I dragged the buck out (in the dark) and left my bow and climber in until this morning. So, the only pics I have are from the butchers shop. This guy was 130lbs dressed, which is good size for my area.
I almost let him walk because the rut is still a couple of weeks away, but the public land I hunt doesn't give you a lot of opps, and he came in so perfectly at 25yrds that I couldn't not kill him. Again, sorry for not adding some team points. :sad0064: |
did we vote on the team name yet.....it happens early in. Congrats on the kill!
|
Early in,
This entire contest is about having fun. You did what you had you do, no worries and congratulations! Now get out there and work on a doe! How about Buck-L-down?" |
Today I had a crazy little 4pt come crashing from the thicket (for whatever reason) I was going to hunt the edge of. It was 3:00PM and I hadn't even pulled my bow up yet. At 5:20PM I had a nice doe walk from the same thicket right under my stand. I didn't want the straight down shot and waited for her to get somewhat broadside, but she just kept walking straight away.
Then, right at dark as I had just lowered my bow, I saw a big bodied, lone deer walk from the thicket. I think I saw antler. I've been having good luck seeing deer so far this season. :happy0001: |
Will, your team is going down buddy)))
Dave |
I lke it Dave! Team Going Down! It's ten times better than Screwing Up!
|
Isn't anybody hunting out there? I'm not hearing any reports. Oh well, I'll be out to tag a nanny after the rain tomorrow. :cool2:
|
hunting this weekend in california for mulies. Unfortunately its with the gun. Then heading to Iowa from Nov. 2nd thru Nov 10th. Then again Nov. 15th thru Dec 5th. Should be a good one down with all that time. Ill keep ya posted!
|
Early,
I'm not back in the deer woods until Nov. 17th. This weekend I have 13 out of state elk hunters with me in Colorado. I'll be guiding the best I can through the following weekend. On Nov. 3rd through the 11th, I'll be guiding kids and first time lady hunters. After these two events I'll be free to pursue deer for myself. I still have a South Dakota tag, Iowa tag, and Alabama tag. I'm also going to try to sneak over for a Nebraska hunt. Everyone make an effort to check in at least once a week, the news and encouragement is good. Hunt hard, hunt safe, and best of luck everyone! |
Good post huck. I surely wish I had the tags you've got! Best of luck to you. The rain here in SE Pa should be pretty much done with around noon or a little after, so that should have them out and about for the evening hunt!
You know it's funny, even though I've already used my buck tag, I'm still excited about tagging another doe. I still get that same "panicked heartbeat" when I see a doe in bow range. :D Good luck out there guys, and be safe! |
Early,
Man, I hope that panick never goes away! It is truly a special feeling.... Well, here's the results from the weekend. I guided three hunters successfully on cow elk. One hunter from Pa. missed a 5x5 bull and another hunter from Texas missed a nice 4x4 mule deer. We saw tons of cows but were having a difficult time locating bulls. I saw a total of 35 elk, all on public ground. Laughs were had by all. I wish I didn't have to come back to the real world for work... I was in heaven! I'll head back to the mountains Friday night for more of the same. I'll try to get some video and photos up. How did everyone else's weekend go? |
Checkin in with a report on opening week here in Bama. We saw some pretty good early action mid morning over the weekend. Saw some big nannies but all had little ones with them. I saw two with one doe that still had good spots. That kinda shows you how late our rut occurs down here. That doe must have been bred no sooner than March or April. I also had a very large cat trot up the road about 80 yards away from my stand Sunday morning. That's the second big cat I've seen in the 15-20 years I have hunted our land. Call it a mountain lion, cougar, wildcat, catamount, whatever......it's one big bad beast. This one wasn't as big as the first one I saw about 10 years ago, but still big enough to make my jaw drop. That long slender curled up tail and low to the ground trot will make your hair stand up every time. It's gonna be warm for the next week and a half so I probably won't go again until a few days into November.

Jeff has hunted the bowzone a few times before. Ask him what -30 I's like to sit in for 8 hours, LMAO. Good luck to you guys. Rocky |
Sitting in minus 30, well it's cold, extremely cold. Doing it for eight hours straight seperates the big boys from the little boys. It's sort of like hunting day in and day out at 13,500 feet above sea level for elk. Hopefully Rock, you get your fair share of that too!
Who's doing what this weekend? Chime in and state your goal. |
Will we don't have to go that far for our elk,and no 13.500 ft would take some time to get used too. You actually need to get that high for them. Ive hunted them in BC in The Rockies but at about 8500 ft. That was a blast, to bad it was a restriction area with a 6point per side area only. I drew my bow 6 times in 4 days there only to be told don't shoot. That was disheartning.
Rocky:barmy: |
Rocky,
Sure, our elk can be hunted anywhere from 5500 feet up to 14,000 feet. However and for the most part, during our hot archery season the elk are as high as they can get. They spend the daylight hours just below timberline. They tend to move above timberline to feed during the evenings and through the night. It requires a lot of boot leather and effort to successfully hunt these amazing beasts. You have to have a mind that looks something like this: ![]() |

Guess I'm SOL, LMAO Rocky |
I hunted Friday and Saturday evenings, but didn't even see a deer. I'll tell ya, at this point I'm VERY glad I took that little 8pt when I had the chance 2 weeks ago. I'm working with 2 antlerless tags remaining. :cool2:
Hey Rocky, how are things going in the great north woods? |
Hang in there Early, I have a sneaky feeling things will pick up...
I finished early with my deer and elk hunters andd was able to pop over into Wyoming yesterday morn (left the house at 3:30am). I had an unfilled doe/fawn antelope tag. I made short work of the task (a rifle is still just too easy but none the less the right tool when time is a premium). I made it back home in time to butcher, clean-up and watch the Saints lose to the Broncos from Mile High Stadium. Another good weekend.... |
lol half hit a 143 7/8 buck, and he is banned too funny.
|
I guess I missed this, why was half banned? I guess we need two new teamies, right?
|
said he was banned for a week and it was 134 7/8 my bad
|
Yep, Half will be back in 3.5 days, according to good authority.
|
Is it too late to check in now?
|
Nope! Glad to see you and welcome aboard, Bowpassion. Tell us a little about you!
|
SOB.......... WELL, the day has came when a two inch branch..................... RUINS MY DAY.... 140-150 INCH 40 yards, F$%K!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry Guys.... |
bummer dude, it happens. Stay after it!
|
I smoked a stud! I need help with the scoring though. He's 22 inches wide 9 point with split eyeguards! HELP
|
I got er dun. check it out
|
Nice BP, I checked it out! What a cool wide/tall deer! Congrats man!
![]() ![]() I finished the Colorado deer/elk seasons this past weekend. My 12 y/o daughter took her very first elk ( I know, not a bow but she's still a little small to pull the required draw weight. She's ready to start trying though). All in all, I sent several hunters home with deer, elk and antelope. It's time to start concentrating on white-tailed deer. I will be in South Dakota this coming weekend. Stay after it everyone! |
Anyone have any luck this past weekend? I was in South Dakota. I let 35 does, fawns and small bucks pass. Nubbers were still with their mother, and I witnessed zero rut activity. Man I hope the EHD in the area didn't wipe out all the big bucks.
