Official thread--Team 11 Silent But Deadly
Everyone is checked in now. It is killing time.
Does will be 25 points this year. Remember to include the hunter, deer and bow in the picture you submit. Entire deer must be in the picture, not just a caped head. |
Arnie thanks for being team captain, looking forward to our Pa season which starts in less than 2 weeks.
|
So it looks like we are going with Silent But Deadly? It sure fits this bunch ...the silent part anyway .... hopefully the deadly part too ;)
|
So if we enter a Doe are we still allowed to enter a buck
|
Don't have any high hopes this year. We lost way to many this summer. Not sure if I will even hunt this area
|
Well sorry I havn't been around too awfully much. I've been so, so busy with work. I did go out to one of our farms this Sunday after church and found 3 more EHD deer in or around the pond. Its not a farm I hunt very much, but still...... While there, i did find a bunch of stands and a camera not belonging to me. I held a "No Trespassing" sign in front of the camera and will give them another week to remove it alll before I take it down and leave them a note where they can come and claim it. I dont have to be that nice, but its easier to give people a chance to make the right decision first than it is to assume the worst. I havent checked my cameras for about 2 weeks, so I'm hopeful that the deer will have started showing up. Hope you guys have a great season, and I'll try to check in a little more often.
|
My understanding that does count 25 points in addition to your buck score.
Two deer can count for your team score. |
One week away, can't wait. Will hunt the first three days since my shift schedule has me off. Usually have no luck early but I going to hunt hard for one of the large eights i have on camera. May have a shot at him.
|
I plan on hunting Monday and Tuesday when IL comes in on the 1st. Unless duty calls, but hopefully things will be calm. I'm just looking forward to sitting in a tree and turning off my phone.
|
I hope to get out the afternoon of the 5th. I'm a HS Shop teacher and work til 3:30. I am about an hour from a treestand so almost too late to hunt during the week.
With help from family and friends, I am hosting a Wounded Warrior Oct 1-5 and hope he gets a chance at one of our good bucks. Good luck all, make sure you have clean kills this year. |

I am hunting a new area this year. The sign from last year looks good with plenty of fresh sign. Been seeing plenty of deer at the field edges in the evenings, but who knows if they will be around in 2 weeks??? I had a couple of cams hung but they were stolen. Not sure if by human or bear??? I am glad doe's count as this year I am using all traditional gear hunting from the ground so any deer in range will get killed.....well at least shot at!
|
At 43 years of age, you'd think I would've learned a little bit of patience by now...but this clock is ticking so slow. 5 More days till IL Bow Season. Hope you guys have a great season. Be Blessed
|
Team mate Tribal from MN has a doe down so we are on the board.
Illinois season opened today so several of us will now have our chance. I am hosting a Wounded Warrior this week and hope he can get on a deer right away. I may get out Tues eve and then again on Fri and Sat. Good luck all! |
Had a slammer in front of me about 25 yards, in thick stuff, wind shifted and he just turned and went back the way he came. Really big buck. Three Doe took the trail earlier. He needed to walk 20 more yards.
|
I posted in the check-in thread, but haven't been on this one. Our season starts on Saturday and I'm off on Monday too. I lost access to some properties that I had permission to hunt last year, but I have good hopes for this season. Good luck fellas!
|
My Wounded Warrior hunter has been seeing deer each sit but hasn't drawn on one just yet. Will post a pic and story if/when he kills out.
I plan to take a day off and hunt with him on Friday in Pike County and then get away and hunt Brown County of Saturday evening. Good luck all! |
Season opens here in Va on Saturday. Did some scouting last Saturday and the acorn mast didn't look very good but the areas I have my blinds set up look very promising. Have several blinds built on intersecting trails with lots of sign. I have to work until 3pm on Saturday so I will be able to sneak in a short evening hunt with my Longbow in hand!
|

Just a two year old I let ealk last friday.....saw one that will go booner status and that's hard to say in NC. Hopefully will post one with him on the ground soon.

http://youtu.be/WAY5USnZMQM pretty buck... can't wait to get in a tree tomorrow. Good luck on the booner. |
Great video, looking forward to seeing that big one on the ground!!
|
Things are as slow here as I suspected. Been out 4 or 5 times now and only seen 1 deer the ehd hit them really hard. Guess I will try the public areas and see how bad it is there
|
Nine on Friday night. Wish I coulda whacked the old doe that busted me in a shooting house.
Sunday night saw 14 including one shooter buck and two yearlings. he worked a scrapeline 100 yards across the field. Great show!! |
I have not seen a deer yet ... tons of fox, raccoon, and squirrels tho ....
|
I went to one of my public hunting areas last nite. Saw 13. Drew in nice 9 pt at 12 yards but he just not quite big enough
|
Our Wounded Warrior had a great time last week hunting in Pike County. I had some quality time with him. I am humbled at the sacrifice he and other young men and women make on our behalf.
Justin did not kill a deer last week. He had several opportunities at does and young bucks but could not close the deal on a big one. He says he's coming back next year and I hope he does indeed come back. He is a quality guy and strong advocate for our military personnel. If you have the wherewithall to invite a veteran hunting, I encourage you to do so. It is one small way we can show appreciation for their sacrifices. We have another guy coming in November for a gun hunt. |
Hey guys a arrowed a Doe this morning. But I broke our computer last week and have no way to post pic cause I can't do it off my phone. Shot her at 8 yards. There was a spike pushing her and her fawn
|
Arnie, Just wanted to say, thats an awesome thing you do for the wound warriors.
PJ, nice deal on the doe. |
Sadly, the Wounded Warrior organization has provided us ZERO help in finding deserving hunters. Phone calls and emails are not returned. We have asked for no funds, just names and contact info.
A few years ago I raised $2500 for American Cancer Society and Susan G Komen. They never even sent a thank you or acknowledgement of the donation. Sad. |
I killed a small buck Tuesday ... 60 6/8 ... the story is a wild one .. here it is from BH.COM

Where to start .... my FIL and I shared the love of deer hunting and guns... whenever we would go down to their place, we would inevitably shoot his wide assortment of pistols and blow stuff up :) .
This year his cancer took a bad turn and he was never even healthy enough to have his family over this summer or even come over for dinner. Our visits were pretty much at the hospital. Fast Forward to last Wednesday ..we were called in as FIL contracted Sepsis .... he was dying ...I watched him die ... due to somethings that I have left out .. it changed me and started my wife and I on a 6 day dawn till dusk "adventure" as he did not prepare and MIL had no clue what to do. So between the meetings with the funeral director to finding a cemetery and meeting with them to finding a place for the luncheon yesterday all while trying to grieve ... it was difficult, but God is Faithful and gave us strength. Wake services all day Saturday ...phone call from their Pastor's wife that the pastor was rushed to the hospital with gall bladder issues and was very ill ... now I must tell you that they lived in the Boonies of South Western NY and our choices were limited. We can't find a pastor ... they ask me to do it ... I could not for reasons I can't say right now, but some of you know. The issue was not me, BTW. They get some traveling Methodist minister to do it, so we met with him between Sunday's wake services. Yesterday was the funeral ...we buried her father ... Andrew and my daughter's husband were Pallbearers ... Andrew thinks of his Mom's funeral and breaks down sobbing in my arms at the cemetery. So sad.... So we are driving home from the luncheon and I called my boss and asked if I could take today off to decompress .. he immediately said no problem, so I am now looking forward to going and sitting in a tree today ... I never got to my tree.... The Deer Story I woke up at 5:30 as sunrise is 7:30 ... I head out a little late at 6:10 for my 7 minute ride to these hunting grounds. I was determined to shoot a buck in honor of my FIL, and I told my wife that as I was heading out... I park the car about 6:20 .. later than I wanted to be ... i get dressed, go to grab my jacket and cinch it to my back pack .... I left it at home :deer: I drive back home, now with bus traffic, grab my jacket, contemplated going behind the house but Jan said, just go where you are familiar and enjoy yourself ... so back into the car .. get to the grounds and start heading in for the supposed to be mile hike back to my creek stand across the street .... Wind is blowing back and slightly to the right (West) .. perfect wind for going up the right side of the property. I walk past the scrub island and the first cornfield that runs North to South and hit the alfalfa field ... I hit the back cornfield which also runs North - South and it is getting pretty light now ... about 7:15 .... I look up and 20 yards away is a monster of a doe standing broadside ...she was watching me come up, so she blew and bolted straight back ... 5 seconds later 2 deer come crashing thru the cornfield real close to me and they are running to the green field that separates the 2 cornfields ... I remember someone on BH.COM saying to blow back at the deer so I did and they stopped in the green field about 60 yards away .... looking, but they can't see me .... I wait about 10 minutes as the wind is in my favor and I want that other big "doe" that came out with a little one .... they calm and start feeding ... I crawled to the edge of the cornfield on my knees and waited for them to feed again .... they did, I stood up ... now they are about 40 yards away and quartering away ... no way I am taking that shot ... my heart was coming thru my chest ... the "doe" finally looks at me and I can see antlers ... My FIL was the type to scoff at letting any deer go, so whenever I did, I never told him :D So the buck see this handsome blob and starts to walk towards me .. there is no way I am taking a quartering too shot .. I wanted a broadside shot or nothing as I had nocked a Grim Reaper ...I stood still ... the buck fed ... looked at me again and walked towards me trying to figure me out... he feeds ... now he turns broadside and takes a step towards the wood line ... he feeds .. I draw....got the bow pulled back he looks at me ... I have to wait to get aligned ... he feeds ... I align ... I guess him at 30 yards ... I wait for him to not be looking at me .. he obliges ... I put the pin on the top of his heart in case he drops and release ..... He drops and turns to his right as I hear that beautiful "SMACK" sound and see with my arrow sticking out mid body right behind the shoulder ... he runs away from the woods with the other deer, straight down the greenfield .... I watch him, expecting him to fall at any second ... he is running great ... 100 yards .....200 yards .... 300 yards .... he gets to the graved road that leads to the Windmills ... the neighboring property is new winter wheat and hay field ...400 yards ... 500 yards ... the land slopes up so I can see this going on ....600 yards ... the little one jumps something and the buck jumped to .. but it looked different .. then I don't see them ... I never seen a mortally hit deer run that far, so I was totally confused ... the arrow looked real good, tho it penetrated not even half way .. I figured it lodged in his off shoulder.... I check out the hit area ... no blood or hair to be found .... I look all around and nothing .... i walk arcs heading towards where I last saw them looking for blood ... nothing ... I get to the gravel road and notice some deer track that looked a little different ... no blood ... I keep walking on to the neighboring property (I have permission to look for hit animals from him) and just keep looking for blood or my arrow .... I am kind of losing hope .. If I wouldn't have seen my arrow sticking in him, I would really be bumming ... but I kept looking and praying.... My eyes come over this knoll and I see a dark spot with what looked like a flag sticking above it... ![]() walking a little more and I know it is him ... ![]() ![]() This buck ran at least 700 yards and it was double lunged .. it was high lung, but the lungs were hamburger ... that is such a sobering thought to me .... shot with a Grim Reaper .... it buried in the front shoulder .. had a hard time getting it out. This is a very special hunt to me as I dedicate this deer to my Father-in-Law ... if he can see me, he is smiling :) So this one is for you, Pops! ![]() |
Congrats. Great story in the midst of some difficult days. Thanks for sharing that.

Hey Shawn
My old team mate when we won it 2 years ago, I see you have Tony on your team,he's also a Pastor, or should I say past Pastor ,LOL. Good luck this year guys. Rocky |
Congrats on a nice deer. Great story, thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear about your father-in-law.

Boy, this team is pretty quiet. I've been covered up with work lately, and that's good, but I'm about due for some time in the woods. I've managed to sqeak in a few quick hunts, but nothing very substantial. The farm here around the house has just had too many EHD kills so I'm not even bothering with it this year. That leaves me about an our and a half drive to get to my next farm. I've had some pretty incredible hunts with tons and tons of deer in the fields and the foodplots. Last week I had over 50 deer out feeding in the evening. 19 were bucks....most of them were little spikes and 4's, but there were 3 pretty good ones. Nothing I was interested in shooting, and it was warm enough that I really didn't want to shoot a doe. I have one plot that I planted in sugar beets and turnips, and it is getting hit hard, but until we get a good frost, it just keeps on growing like crazy. With cooler weather coming in this weekend, and a break in the action here at the church, it looks like SUnday night and monday will be my next chance in the woods. I hope that if nothing else, I can go ahead and put a doe down. Good hunting to you guys!
|
hey guys, shot this buck on Wednesday. I lost some property this year and don't have much time to hunt so I took this buck. Definitely not my biggest, but I was happy.
![]() ![]() I'll get pictures in the scoring thread once I measure him. Good luck to the rest of you. |
Way to go coryj
|
Great buck, thats one awesome six. Its always exciting to put one on the ground.
Out this morning, had a really big 8 grunting and I believe chasing a spike. He came in quick about 45 yards and left the same way. Its going to be heating up soon. Also had a small sike under my stand. This Thursday I start my 10 days off, will be out every day. |
Good job boys!
Please make sure to get your deer entered. I think we have one doe and one buck yet to score and add to our team. |
My computer still broke. Wish I could load pics off of phone
|
Can anyone help him?
You can try sending me pix and score (if buck)via email and I'll try and get them posted on your behalf. [email protected] 217-370-4120 |
