Nice bucks!! Hopefully you can put one of those bad boys down!!

I spot and stalked all afternoon in a steady rain. Saw 8 deer. 2 of them were bucks.
The first deer I came across was a shooter buck. I was walking along a powerline and came to an old shale quarry that hasn't been used in years. It's overgrown with goldenrod and a few patches of smaller trees. I was on the upper side and walked around the rim and spotted a buck. I couldn't tell if it was standing or bedded. I crawled 10Yds. to get behind a bush so that I could get a better look. Now I was 45-50 yds from him. As soon as I verified that he was a shooter, the wind shifted and he spooked. He never saw me, but it's apparent that he smelled me(I was sweating). I doubled back out of the area to make sure I wouldn't bump him. He was in a spot that I'm pretty sure doesn't get alot of hunting pressure. Do you guys think he'll stay around that area? This was only the second time I've hunted that spot(1st time this year), so I don't really know it that well. I might just have to spend a few evenings overlooking the quarry to figure out his route.

I went out Sunday morning & didn't see a deer! Things are starting to heat up a bit, there were 2 fresh scrapes within 25yds of my stand. We also got these pics on one of our cameras.

Those are some nice bucks! I sure hope you can connect with one of those guys. Thanks for sharing the pics. Anyone else getting any pictures of target bucks?

I think he should stay in the area, especially if he didnt see you. I think you are on the right track hanging back and scouting from a distance too. (but.. definately bring your bow! lol) Good luck!
Keep us updated!

He should stay around. He wasn't bumped too bad

OK... Did a full day today... I am beat... Gonna head out at 4am... It is 9pm now... Here is my update... While out today I seen 2 doe and one buck... The Buck, well that thing was moving... It was a big one too... I haven't seen that one... Well at least I didn't know what it was until today... Let me start by saying I have been getting frustrated with myself in many ways... Well I decided I was going to go for this deer which I have been assuming was a doe as I never really seen it's head just it's tail... My cousin and I have built a few ground blinds back in March and April for spring turkey... They work great as we only use what we find laying in that area... Three times this month I have gone to a particular blind on the side of a pond that is boardered by older pines and some mix of older and newer hardwood(oak and Maple)... I have kicked >A< (yes singular) Deer up here 4 times already and it just seems to come back... Well while walking the trail to it about 2 hours later than i normally would due to a number of reasons today it was around 7:45am... Yes it was already shooting time... Well I looked at my trail that we had cleared back in spring and we created for the purpose of us being able to get to the spot and I noticed a muddy area about 15 feet ahead of me... Now I understand we are in the woods but the ground is covered in leafs... Oh yeah you know what it is... My heart began to lift at the sight of it... I walked up to it and it is what I thought... BUT... This thing looked VERY FRESH... I stood for about 5 minutes scanning... I was just about to take a step and heard a thud... then another.... All I seen was a rack and a very big body at about 75 yards up the trail just on the other side of the blind... Now I did go to inspect the tracks and played all possibilities in my head and to be honest I don't think he seen me... I do think I made a little bit of noise in my poor start to the day as it seemed to be doomed from about 4am this morning... Now I know this area friggin very well and have not seen any sign here this year and mind you it has been 5 days since the last time I was there... So now that he was gone I figured I would take to the old logging road he jumped from... He made 3 scrapes within 40 yards of my blind and I can tag him at each one... So I figured I would try the other logging road that leads to the other side of the hill which I also walked the otherday and whoa!!!!!!!!!!!! I find 5 more scrapes... ALL FRESH... So I have spent the rest of the day in another part of the property figuring out where he is and I figure there is a lot of fallen timber in the back half of the pines and a creek at the bottom back there so he has plenty of water around him and plenty of Oaks that dropped acorns in there too... I am going to try it in the AM on the outer edge of that area with my climber on the downhill side which is about 150 yards away but has a lot of sign... I have narrowed it down to where he started and where he came onto the trail and where he was headed... It was one big circle... You could see his tracks... I didn't walk his actual trail and didn't need to... It was soo fresh... The dirt was fresh on the leafs and it had and still was raining...

WIbuckchaser 10-27-2012 07:00 PM

Good luck drawny I hope you get a crack at him.

WIbuckchaser 10-27-2012 07:01 PM

I sat all day and saw one 3 pointer and one 6pointer.

huntinboy1122 10-28-2012 11:10 AM

Good luck guys, didnt make it out this weekend but I might during the week but for sure next weekend!

26drawny 10-28-2012 04:00 PM

Oh he came back... What are the odds??? Now he wasn't in range but I did see him making a new scrape... First time I have ever seen it actually happen in front of me... I wasn't sure if it was the rain drops falling off the trees or what it was at first until he walked out on the trail about 70 yards down the hill from me... That was all happening between 7:30-8:00... I am gonna try to get him... very big body 8 or 9... I forgot to bring my range finder and my binos... I left em in the truck but it dosen't matter because he is friggin big...lol This is starting to look good... I sat the rest of the day satisfied because he didn't leave and I seen 2 doe just not headed in my direction... But he came back so there is still hope...lol I feel great...

Did a morning sit yesterday and saw a really nice shooter buck. He had my attention and i failed to notice the two old wise doe's on my right side. Long story short, one of the doe's blew at me and all deer were quickly out of sight. That buck was about 60 yards out and headed directly towards me. Learned a hard lesson yesterday, always move slow and always be aware of what's sneaking in behind you.

I had a very similar situation last year & cost me a great buck that was only 25yds away.

You'll get him next time!!

No he didn't see me, but he took the other doe's word for it and hauled ass out of the area.

Things are heating up here. I had a buck trailing 2 doe a few nights ago. I heard bucks fighting/grunting, then 20 seconds later 2 doe came running by and stopped 15yds. downwind of me and staring at me. I was on the ground. Then I heard grunting and here a big boy comes on their trail. I wait for him to step behind a bush and I draw. The does blew and busted but he stayed planted, then he slowly dissolved into the thicket behind him. Literally 2 more steps and he was dead! Would've been a 16yd. shot.

Thats awesome... Your gonna get another chance... I hope everyone gets a chance... I have a morning hunt tomorrow and then all day saturday...

Well seen a 6 point around 10 today... He was just browzing his way down the hill headed right for me... He had a very large body but a skinny rack... White coloring all the way around his mouth and under his muzzle... Thick neck and a pot belly... Such a skinny and tall rack though... He looked old but a couple does right above him caught his ears then eyes and he went trotting off after them...

huntinboy1122 11-02-2012 01:25 PM

Things are getting good. I've heard a lot of action and sightings. Good luck eveyone

Small bucks were on the move this morning, had one come in to me while using my climber. I also passed a forkie & a 5pt.

huntinboy1122 11-05-2012 08:31 AM

Well i have a little bad news, which you can read about on this other thread i made http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/bowh...4993-fair.html. The good news is that i have a new property in the works that is in another zone in which i can take a buck. To top it all off my buddy sends me this photo this morning showing the buck he shot on the same property i have been hunting, he even shot it from my spot. I would have been in the woods this morning in that same tree if this mess wouldn't have occurred.

I would go to court and at least explain it... I am sorry to hear about that...

huntinboy1122 11-07-2012 07:05 PM

definitely worth a try of explaning yourself

dstubb 11-08-2012 04:14 AM

I'm not so much worried about the fine as much as i am about not getting a buck this season. Plus the place i have been hunting is genetically superior to any other property i have seen. Monsters everywhere including the doe's.

Go to court. Cant hurt! I went to court several years ago on a charge of forgetting to take my 209 primer out of my muzzleloeader once I was back to my 4 wheeler (not on the road but in the woods). The judge threw it out and I didnt have to pay anything!!

Good luck! If you need some help on that property, just give me a shout! lol

jermelott 11-20-2012 06:46 AM

Any luck guys? I havent had a chance to get in the woods since the 2nd week of October. It is gun season now!!, but.. i wont shoot a doe with a gun anymore, so I plan on at least shooting a doe :( Sorry guys!!

PREDATE 11-20-2012 08:46 PM

No luck here. Between moving 2 weeks ago, being busy with work and wrecking my car last friday I've not had much time for hunting. Last week was an awesome time to hunt, but I only got to hunt 1 day I'm not giving up though! I don't want to leave my tag unfilled! Gun season here too, but I can still go out with the bow. Good luck guys

jermelott 12-03-2012 06:20 AM

Anyone still hunting? Our rut should start to kick off in a couple of weeks.

WIbuckchaser 12-04-2012 05:41 PM

I would like to try some late season if the wife allows it.

huntinboy1122 12-15-2012 11:30 AM

I plan on a couple of late season hunts, no luck thus far though with a buck.

hammerman 12-15-2012 09:30 PM

I'll be out in the morning. Guys are still seeing bucks but just can't get close enough.

hammerman 01-09-2013 06:30 PM

I got a doe sunday morning. I saw her and another doe heading onto our property. I circled around & setup on the ground where I thought they would cross. About 10min later she jumped the fence & gave me a 20yd shot. The G5 did it's job & she only ran 50yds.
I was about to hang it up for the year, this has been a rough year for getting on the deer. I would see a lot but just couldn't get close.
Now I think I will get out a couple more times before the season closes!

Great job man! make sure to post pics. Its been a tough season for me also. building this new house has definately hindered my hunting this season. We have about 20 more days!
