YEAH!!! Way to go SDH!!! Can't wait to see pics!

SouthDakotaHunter 11-14-2012 08:02 PM

So here is a quick pic from my cell... Man I'm shelled after the long drag out... He's not going to score all that great but he should eat just fine - and his body was pretty big actually :-)

joejr69 11-15-2012 01:50 AM

sit left before i leave for camps.gun season starts
saturday .good luck to everyone .

BetterBirddogs 11-15-2012 05:50 AM

That's a good deer there. Looks like a mature deer too. This team has a lot of killers on it. I like it. I'm in a stand right now. I've seen 5 bucks no shooters yet. I've got a good strategy for this afternoons sit. I seen me a whopper last night. I'm gonna take a little bit of a risk and move I'm on him this afternoon. I've been watching him from the other side of the beans. I can move on him with a south wind so I'm gonna try it. Nice deer jay.

pa_yote_hunter 11-15-2012 09:12 AM

Great Looking Deer! I just want to win so we can keep this team together!!

KCMO Cityboy 11-15-2012 09:46 AM

Congratulations SDH! I would be thrilled to death to put something like that down. Glad you got one down before the end of your vacation. I would say your timing was perfect!
Joe, I wish you luck on your next hunt. Sounds like you might be grabbing your rifle this weekend. Have fun.
Andy, I hope you are right about Mr. Whopper. I think it's a good call to be a bit aggressive, especially if the wind is cooperating. Good luck. I want to see a picture of him - DEAD!

Bucktail_Bob 11-15-2012 10:52 AM

Congrats SDH, nice buck, you hunted your a$$ off.

zubba 11-16-2012 04:26 AM

Great buck SDH. It sounds like you deserved it. Way to go.

SouthDakotaHunter 11-16-2012 07:56 PM

Thanks for the nice comments everyone... So here's a write up on the story....

---------------------

Up to this point, it had been a fun but exhausting season starting with archery antelope in WY then SD, a 2 week out of state elk hunt then whitetail hunting starting at the end of Sept. With nearly 30 sits underneath my belt and passing many bucks along the way including missing one dandy, my wife’s patience was starting to wear thin and the hour glass on my available hunting time left for the season was starting to run low. It was time to mix things up. I started to come to the realization that if I was going to fill my tag I was going to have to throw a Hail Mary so on Tuesday afternoon I left my private ground and drove over an hour further away, hopeful I would get into an area with better deer numbers. With only 1.5 days left of my deer hunting vacation I decided I was going to hunt a public area that I had briefly checked out prior to the season but never actually hunted.

Tuesday afternoon was promising as I saw numerous deer including 2 smaller bucks within shooting range. Wednesday AM I decided to hunt my private ground closer to home. Shortly after 9AM with no deer sightings, I decided it was time to give the public ground one last shot. Showing up around 11AM, even with the action I saw Tuesday, I decided to setup ½ mile north and try what I thought would be a great cruising area. I walked in, identified what I considered the main trail and set my stand. Shortly after 2:00 I saw a buck cruising through the timber. When he hit around 50-60 yards and went behind some brush I drew, anchored and waited... At 25 yards, I shot - he went around 50 yards and disappeared behind some brush. As it turned out, that was his final resting place. Not a big buck but considering the impending pumpkin army and how my season had been going so far, it was just time to punch my tag – put some venison in the freezer and start making up for all the time I’ve missed with the family this fall….

So here is the buck I missed and still haunts my dreams... The big branch you leave to give yourself more cover - yeah that one bit hard...

I passed these on the way to my new stand site - always a good feeling seeing sign...

View from my last day perch....

My last day public land buck..

Hey,

How are we to score are deer? I have it all scored up but noticed that people included tip to tip length and outside spread into their score when most people only include inside spread. If I add the tip to tip score and the outside spread score things would look a little better like some other people.

Here is the score....let me know if I should add anything.

LM- 12 1/4 --------- RM- 12
G1- 3 1/2 ----------- G1- 3 1/2
G2- 3 ------------- G2- 1
G3- 2 1/2 ----------- G3- N/A
H1- 3 -------------- H1- 3
H2- 3 ------------- H2- 2 1/2
H3- 2 3/4 ----------- H3- 2 1/4
H4- 1 3/4 ------------ H4- 1 3/4

Inside Spread
10 1/2

TOTAL 68 1/4

I didn't check your math, but the measurements you list look right. Should be 2 main beams, all the points, 4 circumference measurements per side and the inside spread. The Tip to tip measurement isn't factored into the score. Believe that the actual P&Y score sheet has a spot for the tip to tip measurement but its not factored into the score...

pa_yote_hunter 11-18-2012 07:33 AM

Alright....I will post just how I have it scored. I messaged Fieldmouse about people a few people a saw including tip to tip spread and outside spread along with everything else.

pa_yote_hunter 11-20-2012 05:33 AM

STILL IN THE LEAD!! SDH get that deer scored and we will be even further in front!!!

KYDeerHunter03 11-20-2012 04:13 PM

Hey folks! Sorry I wont be able to contribute to the team this year...tagged out during rifle season lol Heres my buck....my 2nd one and my biggest.

pa_yote_hunter 11-20-2012 07:19 PM

What a great deer KY!

pa_yote_hunter 11-25-2012 03:55 AM

Anyone seeing anything? It has been doe only here the last two weeks with shotgun season starting tomorrow.

zubba 11-26-2012 08:04 AM

Is anybody still out chasing whitetails?

KCMO Cityboy 11-26-2012 10:02 AM

Let's keep it rolling guys. The scoring for first place is really tight, as you can see.
I haven't been out for a while and not sure exactly when I'll get to go out again, but I WILL be out again.

Bucktail_Bob 11-27-2012 03:59 PM

I'm still chasing tails. 4 day shotgun this weekend, 3 day smoke pole next weekend.....

Once SDH gets his deer scored it should give us a little more of a cushion....

SouthDakotaHunter 11-29-2012 07:15 PM

With all but one archery tag (would have to drive a ways to hunt) filled I'm pretty much winding down and spending more time with the family... Starting to do some research and put some time\thoughts into how I want next year to play out - what I'm going to apply for. I've never leased ground before but with the popularity of archery hunting lately, there is getting to be lots of pressure in the area's I've traditionally hunted in the past and I've got my eye on a property - weighing the thought of inquiring about leasing it... Hard to write a check for hunting when you haven't had to in the past though :-)

zubba 11-30-2012 05:32 AM

I hear you about leasing SDH. Did you get all your deer scored in the contest? Anyone else out chasing deer?

SouthDakotaHunter 11-30-2012 01:19 PM

Yep, everything has been entered...

Had a guy from work stop by my office and ask me if I wanted to head out west (where I have my tag) and go hunting :-) He has a buck muzzle loader tag (which takes like 4-5 years to draw here) and was thinking about heading out... Very tempting.... :-)

SouthDakotaHunter 12-03-2012 04:21 PM

Looks like the team that is currently in 2nd shot a really nice buck this morning - so looks like we're behind - though not by much (should only need around 75-80 pts)...

Good luck to everyone hunting and just a reminder - does count this year, so if you have smoked a doe, make sure to get it entered!

Look at the bright side though, at least it was a south dakota buck that took the lead. :poke:

All competition aside, i still wish you guys the best of luck, every bowhunter deserves a nice one.

Congrats on the buck sdhunter11, very nice looking animal!

pa_yote_hunter 12-06-2012 07:16 AM

anyone still hunting with a bow? Remember....does count so if you whack one let us know!

KCMO Cityboy 12-06-2012 10:38 AM

Oh yeah, I will EVENTUALLY get back out there with my sticks. I'm currently planning to do some hunting this Sunday. The plan is to do a morning and evening hunt then in between the hunts check trail cameras and hang a couple of stands that I took down that I needed when I was hunting at a different location. Temps will be falling into the 30's that day so I'm hopeful that they will be moving.
LET'S TAKE THE LEAD BACK AGAIN TEAM!!

Bucktail_Bob 12-10-2012 09:23 AM

I’ll go out after a doe if needed, but I rather have someone whack some horns so I don’t have to.
Anyway, the .44 Mag. had some action a couple weeks ago.

SouthDakotaHunter 12-10-2012 09:47 AM

Nice hang gun kill there Bob! Looks like you made a great shot!

pa_yote_hunter 12-10-2012 01:31 PM

Love that first picture Bob!!

zubba 12-11-2012 05:11 AM

Nice job with the 44! I shot a doe 2 weeks ago with the slugger and then killed a non typical 11 pt with the slugger also. It had a triple brow on one side and a 5 inch drop coming out the base of the other. I'll be out the next couple days with the bow then Muzzleloader comes in on sat. Good luck to everyone still hunting.

So I managed to get out for an evening hunt yesterday. While approaching the treestand that I put up last week this buck that I had captured on my trail cam walks across the trail about 50 yds in front of me. I dropped to the ground and hid behind some tall grass and grabbed my face mask, gloves and release from my bag and crawled to a 4' tall cedar to hide behind. He was on to me and kept watching my movements. Thought I might be able to nail the guy once he cleared the grass but eventually, as it always seems, he walked away from me and into the brush. Anyways, at dusk a couple of doe walked in and I decided it was time to take one. Very nice, fully grown. She plopped down about 50 yds from the shot. So another 25 points for the team, and meat for the freezer!!

SouthDakotaHunter 12-17-2012 07:27 PM

Great job KC! We're close!!

Some nice gun deer Whacker!

Bucktail_Bob 12-18-2012 10:24 AM

KC, nice doe.
Wacker, way to "wack and stack"
I'll be out baldy hunting over the next week.

Happy Holidays to all

bb

BetterBirddogs 12-26-2012 09:19 AM

I'm still after em boys. Got close to a 140" 8 last night. A doe ruined it so I shot her for her troubles. I'm hunting this weekend. Hopefully i can get one in the ground.

Bucktail_Bob 12-28-2012 04:20 PM

I stuck a doe tonight...I' ll post pics tomorrow

SouthDakotaHunter 12-29-2012 09:30 PM

Nice work Bob! Keep at it Andy and everyone still out there hunting! Not much time left to pull a Hail Mary!

KCMO Cityboy 12-30-2012 07:06 AM

That's good to hear Bob. Congratulations. So another 25 pts inches us that much closer.
I was out yesterday evening an didn't see anything. When I was walking back to my car I busted about 7 deer that were grouped together. I'm headed back out this afternoon and will probably hunt the same area where I put the doe down a couple of weeks ago.
