Its really surprising how quickly controlled burns promote new growth. I wouldn't doubt at all that it's pretty plush grow by now. Personally, and maybe I'm a bit biased, but I just very much prefer private to public...I mean maybe that's obvious but, it eliminates the possibility of another hunter ruining your hunt. Just my .02 there.

On a different note, our season opens up Saturday as well.. I'll be heading up to the farm tomorrow and then it's game on. I really have a good feeling about at least having an encounter with a good early season buck still in summer patterns. Calling for mid 40's in the morning and evenings and high around 70 with minimal wind. I'll keep all you guys posted on how it goes!!

youngfart 09-13-2012 04:39 PM

Dang
I haven't even got out yet and my season opened on the 5th! Terrible for me,I'm just overloaded with chores around the house. Elk gunt is off for this weekend as is mulies and Moose:eek2:. I think I'll get a morning sit in though for a Nanny and points. Little Chief as Tex said a spring burn is sometimes very rewarding aas the deer will start right of browsing and as the summer goes and the froth comes out . They'll favor it over clover. I'd go with you gut feeling and give it a shot. Tex good luck on your weekend hunt.

Just thought I would give you guys an update on my plans for this season. Our season opens on Monday the 1st of October.

I have opening day off of work to hunt then I am a weekend warrior for the first 3 weeks of Oct.

Oct 26th-28th I have a Bow hunt in S. IL
Nov 3rd-6th I will be bow hunting in southern Indiana

Gun season for me 11/16-11/25 in IL&IN

I hope to have my freezer full and my bucks down by the end of November. I can kill 3 bucks this year. 1 in Indiana and 2 in IL. Illinois issues either sex tags so if I needed to I could use a buck tag on a doe later in the season if need be.

I have 7 tags total counting my firearm tags. My wife and I need 3 deer to make it until next years season. My inlaws need a deer then the rest will go to other family or the feed the hungery program in IL.

Heading Out In The Am 1st Hunt
Got the perfect wind in the morning ,hopefully I can arrow a doe for the team .

Well Here It Is

Look how wide this Buck is

http://

Missed him this morning @18yards through a 3 inch hole in the bushes, when I saw him coming up behind a 170 5x5 that I passed due to him coming . I cut of 2 braches that I could not see in the 3 inch hole and deflected behind him.
He's a main frame 4x4 with 2 kickers on both sides
Rocky
Looks bigger than he does with velvet. When he walked away he looked as wide as an Elk walking away. Aesome morning on stand.

Checking in. I have no desire to be the team caption, but I have done the contest for the last 4 or 5 years. I was even on the winning team one year. As my work schedule allows I will post some trail cam pics of this year.

youngfart 09-16-2012 02:47 AM

TeamWiscoUNIT61 09-16-2012 04:55 PM

Well I just got back into town. Rocky that's a pretty exciting stat to the season! Movement was pretty slow by us, had a few does in range, but not too much excitement. Was at the local bar last night and our neighbor kiddie corner to us came in about 10pm to register a buck she shot. She downed a 170" (ish) 12 pt. The funny thing? It's the buck I was drawn on last year that I wrote about!! What a buck.

henson59 09-16-2012 05:15 PM

Fieldmouse has posted that a Doe will be worth 25 points.

You must post the picture of you, the Doe, and your Bow for it to count. Just like with a buck.

henson59 09-17-2012 05:32 AM

Ok guys Barbara472 is not a member of this team. She isn't even on the alternate list on the contest page. Please disregard her post!

henson59 09-17-2012 05:44 AM

We are still missing 1 team member and I have sent multiple PM's to that person so I have asked Fieldmouse to give us an alternate. Hopefully it's sombody from a big buck state with a few 200 inchers on camera! LOL!!!!!

I have also decided to use the avatar I came up with since nobody really came up with anything else. You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

youngfart 09-17-2012 07:53 PM

Thought something wasn't right when she said she was in the contest the last 4 or 5 years and had only 6 post...

Go getem guys!

henson59 09-18-2012 02:15 PM

This year I was thinking of trying to make some mock scrapes. I was going to use one of those drippers and some of that code blue dirt. Have any of you guys set up a mock scrape with a dripper and had success? or did it not make much of a difference.

TX_Hoghunter 09-19-2012 10:58 AM

I have never tried but good luck and I hope it works for you.

-john

snapper1982 09-19-2012 04:39 PM

i tried for several years and had absolutly no success with mock scrapes. but there are many people who have. i think it matters alot on location.

TX_Hoghunter 09-21-2012 09:25 AM

crazedbowhunter 09-22-2012 05:16 AM

Sorry been gone awhile guys, been real busy here on the farm. Maryland ended up not turning out any big bucks for me, took a doe on the last day but that was before they had even decided to do the points system so I guess next doe I shoot I will take a picture of it so we get the points. And that's one heck of a buck to miss! Hope you get another crack at him, and good luck to everyone out hunting now, season here in PA starts the 29th, gonna go hang a trail cam this weekend to see where their patterns have shifted to.

Hey great job on being the one to draw first blood even if you didn't get the picture.

snapper1982 09-23-2012 07:10 AM

how is everyone doing?

henson59 09-24-2012 05:49 AM

Happy monday. This time next week all of us should be able to start chasin' some tail. Did anybody have any luck this weekend or any good stories?

UFunny2 09-25-2012 02:26 AM

Cooler weather here in Va is getting me pumped! Scouted the refuge property Sunday and found where all the chiggers are! The crops in the ajoining fields are beans and found some good trails leading to/from. It's unbelievably thick, but found some really great stand sights with natural shooting lanes. Oaks are spewing acorns. Season opens on the 6th...tick...tick...tick

superdave10x 09-25-2012 02:48 PM

Hey Team.... im in... hope i didnt miss anything.... NY season starts monday....

henson59 09-25-2012 06:24 PM

Hey SuperDave welcome to the team! I hope you bring a shot at a 200 inch deer to the team LOL!!!!!

youngfart 09-25-2012 06:38 PM

Henson
Was he the last of our team to sign in ?
Rocky

snapper1982 09-25-2012 07:50 PM

well might hunt sat the first day probably wont hunt sunday got to get all my gear loaded in the truck off to illinois to film for a week

henson59 09-26-2012 05:56 AM

Yes we do have a full team now. SuperDave was added because we were missing 1 member after the deadline. So now it's go time. We need to put some deer on the ground and points on the board!

Snapper- do you film for a show? also where in IL will you be filming?

TX_Hoghunter 09-26-2012 09:34 AM

Well I will hit the lease on Friday night. Not sure how long I will stay down there, but at the very least I should knock down a doe for us. If the mature 8 or the mature 9 show up I will probably put an arrow though one of them.

-john

henson59 09-26-2012 09:44 AM

Good luck John!

snapper1982 09-26-2012 02:19 PM

yes filming for a show. south east ill. hamilton county i think. building dreams hunts. Glendal is a heck of a nice guy and got some awesome land. if his trail cams are right we ought to have 2 150-180's on the ground by mid week.

henson59 09-26-2012 02:54 PM

Snapper thats great! well if you could post a pic of the deer they shoot that would be cool to see what they bring down. I actually hunt a farm in Wayne county IL just to the north of where your going. Its beautiful down there if you don't mind the oil wells LOL! Is building dream hunts the name of the show? is it on TV?

snapper1982 09-26-2012 04:09 PM

building dream hunts is the outfitter. i am not sure what the name of the show is going to be but it is being filmed for CTW (chasing trophy whitetails).

Well guys, bow season opened on the 15th in two of the states I hunt in. I went to Missouri for the opener but got rained out. I did manage to get on the stand opening morning and sat in the rain for four hours. I didn't see anything but squirrels.

I suppose I can say that this Friday will be my official season opening hunt. It's supposed to rain, but we'll have B.J., the Super Dog in camp. He's a deer tracking legend, so we're not too worried. :D

This past weekend I was in Great Lakes, IL for my daughter's Navy boot camp graduation. I would have missed a rut hunt anywhere in the country to have been there for her. She's the youngest of six, so I guess I'm officially an "empty nester" now. I can hunt every weekend if I want. :cool2:

Here's a pic I took of my daughter while we were at Red Lobster in Gurnee, IL:

henson59 09-26-2012 06:43 PM

LittleChief good luck on your next trip. And I hope the super dog helps you out! Also good luck to your youngest you should be a proud papa!

Snapper have fun behind the camera. My best friend and I have been talking about filming some of our hunts ogether as a hobby. We are currently trying to decide how much we want to spend on this hobby lol!
