I wouldn't be comfortable making a 400 yard shot.Even300 yards would really be pushing it.

I'm hooked on the .30-06 and don't see much reason to switch toa larger or more powerful cartridge. It does what I want it to do at reasonable ranges, where I can see the deer without optics.
