Hi everyone. Sorry took me so long to get on here. Been real busy at home remodeling our bathroom. I'm good with the name you guys have selected. I have been apart of at least 6 or 7 of these contests now and was team captain last year. I would be willing to do it again this year. What you guys think?

jepcho 03-06-2010 04:59 AM

By the way, my name is Joel. I'm from Iowa, will be hunting in Iowa and I'm really sure I'm hunting Kansas this year too. That means potential for up to 4 birds this year. I'm getting really excited, got some new properties lined up this year that look promising. I'm 24 years old, have been married 5 years and have 2 kids with one more on the way. This will be my 11th spring turkey season. I love to hunt anything but turkey hunting is my real passion. Nice to meet you all and we should have some fun this spring.

mfd1027 03-06-2010 05:46 AM

Hey Jepcho!! Good to see you. It sounds like you're in for a big spring. I'm fine with you being the Capt. but I guess we'll have to let some of the others chime in. I'll go ahead and add you to the check in list I started. Only 3 to go!!!

I'll be hunting mostly in the north central part of the state. I may go down south to the south western corner but I'm not sure. You?

jepcho 03-08-2010 05:52 PM

When does everybody start hunting? I start April 9th, taking my son for Iowa's youth season. Then I get to take the shotgun out myself starting April 16th. I'll be hunting till May 16th. It's gonna be fun!

mfd1027 03-08-2010 06:14 PM

Our season actually started down here on Sat. I had to get my boat painted so that messed me up but I will be out there Wed.
I don't mind missing opening day I have to hunt public ground down here. I will hunt here a couple of days before I head up to my lease in Ga. The season starts Mar. 20th up there and it closes May 15th. I'll be there for a while. :happy0001:

Im hunting in iowa county. Have you ever heard of indian grass hills?

mfd1027 03-10-2010 05:45 PM

My buddy Brad and I took his swamp buggy and headed out to Big Cypress this morning. We hunted about a 1/2 mi. apart and I didn't hear a peep. Brad had a good morning and nearly killed one but unfortunately it came from the direction he had parked the buggy and it spooked when it saw it. That's huntin'. Hopefully we'll have better luck if we get back out next wk. We still had an awesome time and it was great to just get out there and make some noise. Big Cypress is over 550,000 acres so it's a lot of territory to scout and using the buggy to look for tracks is definitely the easiest way to do it. We found some new areas today that looked promising.

I've been making custom mouth calls for 6 yrs. now and frankly I think they're a cut above what you can buy retail.
I'd like to arm my teammates with one if you want em. I've just started up a gamecall biz and have named it "Secret Weapon"Game Calls. PM me if you want one and I'll give you the lowdown on the styles so you can decide which model you want. "Free" of course.

Pope94/IA 03-11-2010 07:29 AM

Oh sweet, Ill have to get one from you and try it out. Im needing some new calls for this year. My other ones are all worn out. Ill talk to my mom about getting one from you then ill pm you once I get the O.K.

BUCKMARK 03-11-2010 12:58 PM

Hoping to get out to the property next weekend to do a little scouting. I do believe our first day of hunting would be on 4/17. So we have a little time to get ready...

wis_rifle_hunter 03-11-2010 04:07 PM

i'll be hunting April 21st through April 25th and i'm thinking about buying a tag over the counter for a later period. probably around the end of April early May.

Arjuna 03-13-2010 07:11 PM

My buddy called one up today for his 12 yr old son. I couldn't take my son today because it was opening day of baseball season. I had to do the opening prayer and Gabe had pictures and his first game. He had a great game and even won the gabe ball for being the most valuable player. I was proud.

I will go out Thursday and Friday. I'll let you know how it goes.

mfd1027 03-13-2010 07:42 PM

Pope94/IA 03-14-2010 12:40 PM

I went out this weekend to do some shed hunting and to stay the night at our cabin. We walked probably 5-6 miles and only found 1 shed. But I did find a few other things that were pretty interesting... We found a couple feathers off a turkey wing and I also found a turkey leg!!! I was walking along a fence line and there lying in the middle of the path was a turkey leg. It was broken (cut) off about 2-3 inches above the spurs. He had some pretty decent spurs on him. What do you think would have happend to him? Coyote get him or maybe broke his leg? You wouldn't think the leg would still be there from a fall turkey kill? Ill get some pictures up soon.

turkeyslayer15 03-14-2010 02:49 PM

turkeyslayer15 checkin in im from KY

mfd1027 03-14-2010 02:54 PM

Pope94/IA 03-14-2010 03:52 PM

Welcome to the team.

Oh I forgot to mention in my post above.. I also saw a tom on my shed hunt. It was a nice sized one. I was walking in a thick patch of trees and about 10 yards from me jumps up this tom. He wasn't too scared because he just walked off. I tried getting a picture but it was too thick in there.

Arjuna 03-17-2010 07:58 PM

Headed out in the morning. The Jeep is packed and I am stoked. I'll keep you guys informed.

mfd1027 03-18-2010 02:39 AM

Good luck , Jack. I'm headed to Ga. but have to make a few stops along the way. I will definitely be there for the opener on Sat. Hopefully one of us will put us on the board. I wish your call would have made it there. Oh well, next hunt.

Dan

Pope94/IA 03-18-2010 03:09 PM

32 more days till I get out there... Its gonna be a looooooong 32 days.

Dan, do you have an estimate on when the calls should arrive?

mfd1027 03-18-2010 04:35 PM

Andrew, It's kind of weird how the PO does things. Some of the calls came back to me because the plastic case created an irregular package and they wanted more postage. The irregularity makes them a parcel package. Yet, some of the calls that were packaged the same exact way went through. I know you will have it by next Wed. at the latest.

Whats up team. I am going crazy with the wait. Walking around the house in full camo turkey calling and driving wife crazy. My 4 year old girl tells me I'm silly, my wife rolls her eyes and tells me I'm obsessed, (i dont argue) But my 1 year old son follows me grinning ear to ear and laughs every time I gobble at him. 2 weeks to wait then game on.

mfd1027 03-20-2010 10:55 AM

We're on the board!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the stats.

Wt.-19 lb 13 oz
R- 3/4"
L- 7/8"
B- 9 5/8"
---------------------
Score - 54.629

We'll do a lot better but he's a start!!

Here's the story:

What a morning!! I started owling at around 6:50 without any response until a crow fired up at 7:06 and finally a gobble.
This one was off the property but he started a chorus. lol I had 2 birds within 150 yds. so I eased into the open pines they were roosted in and set up. This is wide open pines and I always try to find a tree that has a few bushes around it to hide in a little. I had to make a little noise clipping some stuff and pulling some dead stuff out of the way so I was holding my breathe I hadn't blown it. Man, was I happy when I got cut off on my first tree yelps. I just sat there quiet until they flew down and felt pretty good about the situation with one behind me about 100 yds. and one out front about 150 yds. I did a little flydown followed by some excited yelping and both of em fired up. I was afraid to swing around the tree to wait for the one coming from behind so I just eased my gun up and faced away from him. It wasn't 2 min. after I had done my yelping when he gobbled not more than 30 yds. behind me. It scared the crap out of me and there was nothing I could do. I froze. I could hear him walking in the pine straw as he approached. At 5 yds!! I heard pft-vroooooom! Not much I could do but look for the other bird out in front and pray this one would walk past me. He didn't. He strutted around behind me for about 5 min. and then eased off. He wasn't spooked he just walked back the way he came. I had been quiet for about 10 min. now so I yelped a few times softly - nada!! I usually take this as a good sign and had a feeling he was easing his way toward me so I scratched the leaves a little and clucked a few times. Geooobbbbbbbblllleeee!!!! rt. in front of me at about 60 yds. He just stood there frozen with the ol periscope looking both ways. I just waited. This went on for about 2-3 min. and then he started easing toward me with that half strut walk they do. I ****ed the hammer on my Encore and squeezed the cheek piece tight against my face as I lined things up. 60-55-50 and he's still coming. 50--45-40 and he stops and sticks his head straight up- big mistake!! Booooooom!!! He went to flopping!! I jumped up and opened the bbl. to stick in another Hevi 13 #7 as I walked toward him. Man was I happy!! I put my boot on his head as he finished up his death flop and thanked God to be able to do what I do!! What a day!! BTW- No decoys- only mouthcalls.

Dan
