Looks like we have a good team. All of my turkey hunting is done on public land. Are you guys hunting public or private lands?

EFH 03-04-2011 02:39 PM

I'll be hunting private land and have it all to myself! LOL! Gonna bust em for team 4!!!! It's not a big chunk of land but it's good for 3 or 4 birds every year. I also hunt with friends on other clubs. I've hunted public land but probably won't this year. 11 days till season, are you kiddin me! can't wait!!!!!

Arrowmaster 03-04-2011 06:10 PM

Sounds good to me also. Did not get to scout today, very windy. Looking to sneak into the woods tomorrow. Less than two weeks left.

I'll be hunting mostly private land. I can go with the "Spurr'n Longbeards" name as well its the one I like the best out of the names that I had suggested. Like I said before though the name doesn't matter to me a bit!!!

IBHUN10 03-05-2011 11:09 AM

:bash:Starting to get a little concerned here with my choice of going with the early season this year. We received 5 inches of new SNOW here again in N. Mich. EFH and RPD63 I see you guys are about to be hunting soon...Good Luck and get this team going with some good Turkeys.:happy0001:

RPD63 03-05-2011 11:18 AM

Thanks IBHUN10, will do my best to get us on the board. I only hunt public land, so the birds that my hunting partner and I get are well earned. My hunting partner is over on team 13.

EFH 03-05-2011 04:27 PM

Will do IBHUN10! Southernstrut should lay em down early with us too!

SouthernStrut56 03-05-2011 06:54 PM

I'm hunting private, which is this place, and a few other places with some buddies around here. I went down this weekend and took this picture of our place. This is the main place I hunt, usually loaded with birds but I only saw one hen yesterday, which ain't a good sign. All the fields you see here, plus a bunch more behind me, will be plowed up by next week and corn planted at the end of April. There's a river to the left of the fields and our land goes up the hills in the woods on the right. I saw a lot less birds during deer season this past year, and haven't been seeing any over the past two weeks, so I'm not sure how good of a season it's gonna be down here. One of my buddies is in a club loaded with birds and nobody hunts em, so I got that place as a back up.

EFH 03-05-2011 07:34 PM

Don't worry SS! If you've been hunting that spot and doing good in the past, they'll show up. Were I hunt on the sipsy, I rarely see a bird during deer season, but in the spring they always seem to show up. They are creatures of habit and I gotta feelin you gonna tear em up!!!!!

Damn I love the way that looks. Im sure the birds will be there. SS let me set my blind on one of those points and I will score using the raspy blue call. It looks sweet to me...

Man I hope so. I usually see more birds than I've been seeing lately, but once it all gets plowed up I think they'll be comin outta the wood work and struttin their stuff in those fields. I'm ready to get started though guys!

SouthernStrut56 03-05-2011 08:12 PM

Kenny, I got you a spot picked out bud. Be thinkin of a weekend in April you can come down and we'll get after em. Glad you like the call, I guess I need to make some more of the big blue nasty's and sell em!

EFH 03-06-2011 01:34 AM

Sounds great EFH. I also got out for a bit before church. Found a very hot gobbler on the edge of a pond that I often hunt. After about 15 minutes of gobbling. he hit the ground and left with his hens. Need to be between him and his hens when I get my chance at him. RAY

I made a few mouth calls for Arrow that he's gonna use to put the "who dun it" on some gobbler heads this season, particularly the ol nasty raspy blue one I call the Fat Lady. EFH, if you use mouth calls I'd be glad to put a couple together you can add to the vest for next week. I already got one in mind for you, it's a baaad little dude that I'm starting my season off with. Lemme know bud

EFH 03-06-2011 09:12 AM

Hey SS, I like mouth calls like a fat kid likes cake! LOL! Wouldn't want to cause any extra work, but I ain't gonna turn one down. :D

Yeah Ray I'm really blessed. I've enjoyed many seasons full of excitement and plenty of gobbling, I love that place. The birds are still as hard to kill as any others in the state, if not harder in my opinion because of the competition from guys hunting around me. I got one guy that hunts the property to my east that's quite possibly the best turkey caller and hunter in the state. And another guy that hunts anywhere he pleases and is the smoothest poacher on earth. Got people across the river that also do anything they want, plus another guy across the river who kills the heck outta some turkeys. All in all this whole area, my land and the surrounding properties, has some pretty dadgum good turkey hunters putting the pressure on em all season long.

I saw the comment where you said you make calls also....? Box, slate, mouth calls? I'm relatively new at making mouth calls, but I've caught on quickly and got some good sounding stuff. Still got a lot to learn I'm sure, but I have a few calls I recently made that will be with me for a long time.

No extra work for me bud, I love making em, plus my wife works 2nd shift at a nursing home so I got nothing better to do when I get off work every afternoon. I should have some more supplies coming in tomorrow so I'll make u a Fat Lady and a couple more good ones.

Sounds like he's one of those you need to leave your calls in the truck for. A good flap of the hat against your leg at sun up might be enough to make him fly down and run right to you. Glad yall are seeing and hearing some, I sure hope they show up at my place by opening day. Yall are pumpin me up fellas, good luck with em!

That flydown hat flap could just be the trick to get this old boy to come my way. I was just now going to get on Google Earth and see what the terrain looked like in the direction he was headed. He actually hit the ground and left before all of his hens had made it to his location. Should be a fun bird to hunt.
As far as making calls. I do woodworking for a hobby so I make box and pot calls in my spare time. Never tried my hand at mouth calls. This year, I am going to go into the woods with only calls that I have made. ( owl, crow, box and a few pots)

A buddy of mine told me a guy he worked with was having trouble with clever old tom last year that flew down every morning and didnt make a sound, just got with his hens and you never heard or saw him all day....a scenario we all have been in the middle of. The old man this guy hunts with told him to leave his calls in the truck so he wouldnt be tempted, and flap the hat at first light. He didnt make a sound, just flapped that hat on his leg. He said the tom flew down almost in his lap and made a bee line right to his final resting place. Also, go to Turkey and Turkey hunting's site or get the latest magazine and read the article on roost pitting. Soft soooft calls are almost the only way to get those smart birds sometimes.

I've also been trying to get where I just take calls I've made with me in the woods. I've made a lot of them, some great and some not so great, but three designs in particular are in one case and ready to go this season. I've been wanting to start making box and slate calls, so I bought a box call kit recently (already constructed and ready to go), and I carved this into the lid and coated it. It's my Smokey and the Bandit call I made for my buddy's son Bo who loves the movie and was nicknamed after Bo "Bandit" Darville (Burt Reynolds). They loved the trans am bird on the lid. I hope to eventually make them from start to finish like you.

RPD63 03-06-2011 10:24 AM

Thanks for the advice, that just may work. I checked Google Earth and the bird may be heading to an open field on private property.
Nice work on the call. Art is not one of my talents. lol
